UPDATED Large Imperial Guard Organisations
@ask-the-moritatprime saw my previous version of this post and said:
(While this is decent, there’s the strictly big problem, well a small one is you missed divisions completely. The rank bit is completely meaningless within the context of the guard. But the actual big one is, that the term Regiment, as even stated in the new Codex is just a term, not a unit of measurement except for by well the Munitorum to determine how many have been raised. Their numbers vary wildly. That is for a good reason. Because trying to use a modern military structure for a Galaxy spanning empire with no military standard except for “Everyone gives us troops or you die and here you get a lasrifle. I’d like more concrete organization myself, being a military man. But what they did, they did for a good reason. It is one of the ONLY good things I’ll give em for stuff like this.
Also, Soviet figures are a dangerous thing to use. Their accuracy is questionable due to their nature and the fact that, they very often fudged them on purpose. But thank you for taking the time with this to start with, it’s a very good primer for people completely uninitiated to the idea of large formations.)
--------- I’m going to discuss the whole Regiment and term and why I think that’s a piece of junk background that should be ignored in another post, but @ask-the-moritatprime is totally right that I missed Divisions... so:
----------
Above the Regiment are a series of other formation sizes, all commanded by officers from the Adeptus Munitorum, the overarching command and logistics body of the Adeptus Terra that control and contains the Imperial Guard. Once a Guard officer is promoted past the rank of Colonel they become part of the Munitorum proper and are now in the ranks of the General Staff. But what are their ranks and what do they command? Well: 2 Battalions = 1 Regiment - Colonel 3 Regiments = 1 Brigade - Brigadier 3 Brigades = 1 Division - Major-General 3 Divisions = 1 Corps - Lieutenant-General 3 Corps = 1 Army - General 2+ Armies = Army Group - Marshal 2+ Army Groups = Front - Field Marshal 2+ Fronts = Front Group - Lord/Lady Marshal Above this level we have Crusade Group (commanded by Lord/Lady Generals) and Crusades (commanded by Warmasters or Lord/Lady Solar). A Crusade will typically consist of multiple Crusade Groups, with each Crusade Group assigned individual systems or - in the case of sparsely populated areas - sectors. And how many people do these august individuals command? Well… assuming that a figure of 2,000 personnel per regiment is a reasonable ‘average’ (taking into account large regiments and small regiments), then: 1 Brigade = 6,000 1 Division = 18,000 1 Corps = 54,000 1 Army = 162,000 Army Group = 486,000 (3 Armies) Front = 1,458,000 (3 Army Groups) Front Group = 4,374,000 (3 Fronts) Crusade Group = 13,122,000 (3 Front Groups). Sounds a lot, doesn’t it? Well - it is! Bear in mind that the Red Army, according to official Soviet figures, had a peak strength during WW2 (1st Jan 1945) of 11,084,086 people! Now there’s more people involved than just the lasgun-carriers. There are all sorts of logistics personnel, so assuming a teeth-tail ratio of 1-3 (1 soldier to every 3 rear area Departmento Munitorum personnel) that means that there will be 52,488,000 people (roughly) involved in an Imperial Guard Crusade Group. And in a Crusade made up of multiple Crusade Groups... well. Imagine a Crusade consisting of three Crusade Groups: that’s 157,464,000 soldiers and logistics staff! This, of course, doesn’t count other Imperial forces, such as: Local PDF Sisters of Battle and Frateris Militias Adeptus Mechanicus Legio Titanicus and Skitarii Adeptus Astartes Imperial Navy In short, GW’s numbers are all wrong. Not saying mine are perfect - but they are at least a good starting point for a better understanding of the sheer size of the Imperial Guard and the Imperium’s main fighting force.
