The Fighting Cocks
Wexford Road

Nestled in almost the exact dead centre of nowhere, The Fighting Cocks has something of a reputation among the humble rural folk of Carlow, Ireland’s flattest county.
We were in the main bar for a surprise birthday party. The target came in and was duly surprised. At some point, I had to go to the restroom.
Now, normally, when you go through a door marked “toilets”, you get to the toilets. This door led to a little antechamber that looked like you were crossing a corridor between two places unrelated to the bar. There was another sign and another arrow pointing at another door.
Now, normally, when you go through another door marked “toilets”, you get to the toilets. This second door led to a weird other place that looked like a Tron set. This ended in another corridor and there it was.
The entire experience was a curious mix of traditional and modern. If the new place was a recent addition, the designer made no attempt whatsoever to make it fit. Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
The bathrooms were surprisingly well maintained for a pub clearly aimed at farming families in the middle of rural nowhere. However, I feel that their experiment in combining a trip to the bathroom with a treasure hunt was not a success.
