6 hours into the 8 hour miniseries, and I like nuRoots more than the original. Every single actor in this gives a phenomenal performance, particularly Malachi Kirby. Roots lives and dies on the strength of Kunte Kinte’s character, and Kirby delivers every second he is on screen.
The cinematography is excellent. The scoring is excellent. Every scene hits its mark. I was dead set against watching this (or anything about slavery) from the second I heard about it. I flipped past it on tv today, watched ~15 minutes, and was immediately enraptured. This is a story that is deeply painful to watch, but the strength of the production and the performances carries you through.
