And ahhh last semester of nursing school!! That’s seems like yesterday. I’ve been out of school for 2 years… crazy. Enjoy it as much as you can. Hydrate, take breaks, and please take time for yourself when you can because nursing school is stressful enough—and once you graduate, you’ll be working and learning a whole new kind of tired.

Also, the NCLEX truly is not as scary as people make it seem. Don’t second guess yourself. You know the material more than you think you do, and half the battle is trusting yourself. Stick with your gut 🤍 You’re going to do amazing.

My favorite study tip was after I finished my study guide, I’d make a blank one and go find a giant whiteboard and just write down everything I could remember about a topic. Then I’d focus on the parts I didn’t know as well. It helped me figure out what I actually understood versus what I just recognized while reading.

And I don’t know what your school uses, but for NCLEX studying I literally just did 100 ATI practice questions a day. I only waited two weeks after graduating to take my NCLEX, but honestly you know yourself best and what timeline will work for you.

My name is Emily and I am a nursing student at Holy Family University pursuing my BSN. I am in my 3rd year of nursing school and let me tell ya, it’s been quite the journey! There have been many tears, laughs, and energy drinks but there is nothing else I would rather do.

I am going to be posting some helpful tips and information from the classes I am taking and hopefully it will help someone. I do not know everything there is to know about nursing (and I’m sure I never will since learning never stops) but if anyone has any questions, suggestions, or additional tips/information for me to post, please feel free to message me!

30 Things I Learned My First Month as a Nursing Student

On School

1. Everyone is totally terrified the first week.

2. It’s okay to be scared - but do the thing anyway.

3. You know more than you think.

4. When faced with self-doubt, listen to your favorite song, go work out, drink a cup of coffee, shower, or all of the above - you’re capable, and you can do this.

5. Do small projects right away.

6. Chip away at bigger projects over time.

7. Don’t listen to the haters.

8. Contribute positive vibes whenever you can.

9. Rethink your studying tactics - especially in an accelerated BSN - revamp them if necessary. What can you do to make them even more efficient?

10. Get organized - get a master paper or electronic calendar. I synced my iPad calendar up with my school and personal emails so all events pop up there. I also have a paper planner just for school assignments so I can write them down as they are assigned without filling up my personal Moleskine journal...yup, I am a journal addict.

11. Go ahead and sign up for the rewards club at the cafes closest to your school and home...it’s good to get out and study somewhere else to break up the studying groove.

12. Make time to go out or do something  just for you at least once per week - you’ll return to work refreshed and recharged.

13. Utilize all the resources your school gives you - review books, online test prep, the academic resource center - even if you never did before, you may be surprised at what helps the material stick.

14. Study smart. Stick to what works for you. (I tend to highlight PowerPoints, skim the textbook readings, and do every practice question I can get my hands on.)

15. Don’t be afraid to ask for help - from your classmates, from professors, whomever.

On Life

16. You’ll be with your cohort for the next year (or longer.) You don’t have to be friends with everyone, but keep it classy and friendly. These are your teammates in the hospital.

17. Bring other people up, don’t tear them down - and stay out of it when others do.

18. It’s okay to say no.

19. It’s also okay to say yes.

20. Go-to breakfasts and lunches make eating healthy easier.

21. Cook dinners in bulk to eat throughout the week.

22. Lean on your other nursing friends for support - no one gets it like they do.

23. But don’t neglect your other relationships - call your family, best friend, significant other - and tell them you love them.

24. Carry hand sanitizer and snacks in your backpack.

25. Keep an extra phone/laptop charger in your car.

26. Scan and upload electronic copies of everything you’ll need to submit for clinicals, background checks, etc. Nothing worse when you get the call that says they haven’t received your info yet, and can you resend ASAP?

27. Put bill due dates, prescription renewals, etc. on your calendar as reminders to make sure they don’t go unpaid or renewed. (Same goes for anything with a monthly due date.)

28. Make plans for time without the grind - it’s good to look forward to a vacation  or a dinner with friends.

29. Keep yourself healthy and your stress levels low(ish.) Hydrate, take your multi-vitamins, meditate/pray/sit in silence, exercise - even walking on the treadmill or pedaling on the recumbent bike while studying adds up. Eat veggies.

30. Believe in yourself.

Confused about everything

Hi. I want to become a RN one day but I have no clue on where to start. I just graduated high school so I have no college degree. What is the first thing I should do to work towards that goal?

I talked to a school and they told me to get my medical assisted degree but then another told me to get my LPN degree. I just don’t know what to do.
