My therapist brought her bitless bridle for me to try today! It's a nurtural one, and is very nice.
I was a bit concerned, as Shylo does try to take advantage and I didn't know if I would be able to stop her should something spook her, or she decided to act up.
So, I lunged her first, and she didn't put up any sort of fuss. I was shocked! I know that sounds terrible, but I really was shocked! She was on the bit, and relaxed, and stretched out... It was wonderful!
So I hopped on. I could tell right off the bat that she was confused and uncomfortable. She was playing with her mouth trying to find the bit.
I send her trotting out, and she promptly bolted and let a few bucks out. I pulled back, and she threw her head straight up in the air and stopped dead.
She realized this was most definitely something different, but I still had control. She realized that, although there was no bit in her mouth, she would get pressure under her jaw, and on her cheeks. She didn't like that, and so stopped just as she should.
I got her to back up. Then I asked her to trot out. She did so right away. I turned her, she didn't want to. So I put my outside leg on, and she turned right away.
I practiced some figure eights and serpentines. She did great!
Asked her to canter, she let out a little buck, but was perfect after that.
Popped her over the tire jump, she took off bucking afterwards, and so I pushed her forward into a circle. She didn't like that, and pinned her ears. When she relaxed and slowed down, I asked her to stop.
Popped her over the jump a few more times.
All in all, I don't think I would feel comfortable doing bigger jumps with the bitless at this time, but I could definitely see me trail riding, and doing flatwork in it, as well as ground-driving.
And, if I'm being honest... Shylo stops better in the bitless! lol! So I'll be using it for a couple weeks to see if I can get her to relax more into it, and possibly pop over the other jumps.
