Strawberry nut bread
I just found this recipe for nut bread. Mother typed it up and it was clearly intended for me because she refers to it as Great Grandma's recipe. We don't have any recipes (that I know of) of her Great Grandmother.
My own mother probably didn't have time to reread her work or she would perhaps have noticed that she doesn't say how much salt or when to add it!
Grandma told me that when she was baking as a young woman, she used to shove the wood or coal into the oven and let it heat up. Then she'd open the oven door, stick in her arm and decide if the oven had reached a "moderate" temperature. I simply set the dial for 350 degrees.
This recipe makes one loaf pan of bread mix. Someone must have done a lot of division though. My Great Grandmother had 12 children so she would surely not have bothered using a recipe that called for only 1 or 2 cups of anything!
Grandma grew up on a farm and they would have used nuts from trees that grew on their own land, maybe hickory nuts or beechnuts or walnuts. I had a package of pecans in my cupboard, so I tossed some of them into my blender and pulverized them into the consistency of whole wheat flour. Turn of the last century rural diets probably called for larger chunks.

Making an old Italian family recipe for Christmas....'Pana pa pade' (Italian pepper bread), full of nuts, raisins, honey, flour, (and a few secret ingredients)!! Shaped into loaves and baked for 30 minutes. Results....a delicious hard nut bread, (envision a heavy door stop! lol). This was passed from my grandmother to my mother, to me. I don't know who will continue to make it when I'm gone, but for now my husband and I enjoy baking it and sending it to family members to remind them of our family tradition!
