Distance had always been a strange bedfellow in their relationship. Sometimes that meant rooms and then, before long, the sea. Countries, roads, perilous professions – it had been keeping them away from each other, and it always would. He knew this, Mason knew this, and they also knew that, now, there was something solid: home.

Nolan sighed. He was stalling, standing outside, the cool breeze billowing around his coat. Engulfed only in the dim halo of a street lamp, he fumbled in his pocket for a cigarette. His hands were shaky. Almost did he drop the cigarette, an unfamiliar little weight, but he still caught and lit it.

“Smoking”, he mumbled and parted his lips to blow out the smoke; a smile curling around his mouth corners. “The things I do because of you...”

After the rhythm of intake and outtake, his breathing had slowed down enough for him to grind out the gleaming glim in between his thumb and index finger. This had only been the prelude – him unlocking the door, keys cold and heavy, was an initiation. Taking another deep gulp of air, Nolan stepped inside, on the lookout for one familiar face.

Dread uncoiled in his stomach.

Had he called ahead of time to let Mason know he would be back today? Was he even here or out on another hunt?

[Sure, I’d love to. School has pretty much eaten away at any leisure time I used to have but I’ve wanted to get back into the writing swing for a while now. Besides, I think Mr. ‘we do not talk about feelings’ misses Mason, too. c:]
