The Aeilund Saga: A Brief Review
So I’ve been kicking it old school with some Neverwinter Nights modules, and I thought I’d give a quick review of my thoughts of The Aielund Saga. I played through all parts, so this review will be for the entire series.
Level/World Design:
A very nice use of modded tilesets and skyboxes as well as custom content to make an old game look as good as it can. There were several environments that I thought were actually quite pretty, outdated graphics and all. My only complaint is that there was sometimes a lot of running back and forth which I haaaate but there is a teleportation system added later which helps.
Story:
This is a basic, classic fantasy story about defending the kingdom and gathering allies, but it’s done quite well and there are several returning locations and characters throughout the series, which is quite nice and makes you feel a little more attached to the world.
Characters:
Again, nothing we’ve never seen before, but the main characters - especially the companions - are done well and have distinct personalities. I especially liked Nellise and Robert. Companions also have some banters between them, and the romance with Robert is cute. Again, nothing groundbreaking, but it adds a nice touch to character development.
Combat:
My bigggest complaint about the series is that, especially later on, there are some ridiculously long/tedious fights (why are there like 40 duergar. Whyyyyy). NWN combat in general hasn’t aged quite well, so I didn’t enjoy having to do a ton of it. Oh well.
Overall: The scripted encounters and level design of this module series really demonstrate NWN1 modding at its best. (It’s definitley going to be hard to try earlier modules with more basic tilesets now...). If NWN1 mods are at all interesting to you, you definitely have to give the Aielund Saga a try.

Don't forget that beamdog is actually going to host the online servers feature! Now we can play without having to save an ip, or some other wonky work arounds to connect to persistent worlds!
Holy heck, you guys!! Aaaahhhhhhhhh!!!
Just for fun I decided to try playing through the NWNEE OC with a solo monk. No henchmen, no henchmen quest items, no respawn.
I had to load a save only three times. The first time I died it was during the quest to retrieve the last reagent (in Meldanen's estate) but that was due to my own negligence. The second and third were both due to the game's AI apparently deciding my PC was too OP and spawning Shadow Fiends in Helm's Hold as a result. I'd never encountered them before. They kept draining my strength with shadow attacks until I ran out of potions of lesser restoration.
But after reloading I avoided the first group of those (which had appeared in the courtyard) by downing a potion of speed, grabbing the etched gem off the corpse near the entrance to the courtyard, and running past them into Helm's Hold proper in order to activate the guardian armors, which oddly enough didn't kill them, but the mere presence of one in the courtyard seemed to render them harmless. After that they just stood there doing nothing while my monk killed them at leisure and I laughed at the AI's feeble attempt to cheat at this game.
The second group were in a closed room upstairs so once I knew they were there I just avoided that room altogether after reloading. The final battle with Desther also had a ridiculous amount of ghoul lords but I just drank another potion of speed and ran around throwing Stars of Ojy-do at them until they were all dead. It was hilarious... a horde of ghoul lords chasing me around the chamber with the slower moving zombies lumbering behind, while Desther cowered in the hallway outside (he had initially followed me out there but for some reason didn't follow me back in).
So anyway I blew through Chapter One in just 2 days (with breaks to eat, do chores, and sleep of course). That's a record for me.
Monks are awesome.
Here is a preview of Friday's Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition Infinite Dungeons video. It is time for one last detour before heading to Level 3. See what trouble I get myself into after 12pm EST:
