A Big Apple Travel Gem: The Great New York City Public Library
In a city of 30 thousand dollar a year private schools, 800 dollar (or more) a week kids’ camps, and $15 an hour babysitters, the New York City Public Library system is such an amazing tool for parents – and NY’ers of all walks of life. It is a great, free, resource – and one which remains as awesome today as it was years ago.
Growing up as an ‘80’s “latch-key” kid, I have fond memories of…

...you dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a fuckin’ education you coulda' got for a dollar fifty in late charges at the Public Library."
Good Will Hunting
Being frugal is such a downer sometimes! Especially when you finish a book and peruse the stacks at Borders only find about 50 books you want to buy but shouldn't. I always walk away empty handed and frustrated. Too much.
Conveniently, on the way home from work I passed the NY Library. Ah ha! Light-bulb moment! I walked to the help desk and enthusiastically asked for a library card. It was like I was 7yrs old again. What a magical place. Thinking about all the possibilities, all the books I could read, all the freedom. I became giddy!
It kind of made me want to stand outside the door and go, "You guys, this place let's you read FOR FREE. I don't think you heard me, FOR FREE!"
Not to mention owning a library card lets me remain a student no matter how old and gray I get. So what are you waiting for? Seriously, let's all go :)
Note: I highly encourage a college education, but this quote will always make me happy.
