In regard to your thoughts on the schooling system: I don't think that it's particularly the teachers' fault on the matter, really, because they're judged on their performance as a teacher based on how well students score on the MCAS tests. Plus, teachers are very often underpaid for their work and don't have the time/energy/resources necessary to help kids along?? But I agree the system is stupid. (sorry i really don't mean to sound overly argumentative but i think this is important to note)
