Lesbian stereotypes are not all that uncommon: spinsters, tweed, brogues, mullets, khakis, visors, masculine, dykes, biker chicks, power suits.

Anything but fashionable, right?

Not so fast. What about Fran Drescher? Beautiful. Carly Simon? Chic. NYCHA Board Member Margarita Lopez? Professional. Danielle Egnew? Rock on.

NYCHA board members and other officials have been creating ways to reduce crime rates in NYCHA for some time.

People seem to think that public housing is not monitored, or that people don't care that crime is happening there, but the reality is that it's hard to keep criminal elements out when the people living there let them in.

This policy was enacted years ago to help residents identify and refuse entry to those with a criminal history and NYCHA.

Environmental Coordinator and NYCHA board member Margarita Lopez helped residents form Resident Green Committees that continue to plan and initiate projects that add green spaces to NYCHA communities.

Whether it's planting trees around NYCHA developments, or helping people open their own public garden, the Resident Green Committees and Margarita Lopez are working hard to make sure that low income New Yorkers will always have a place to escape from the concrete environment of the city, and make themselves at home in nature for a few minutes each day.

I am sure it’s all over the country but in the New York City area we have a housing issue. Why not work with what I consider the best affordable housing and keep it and preserve it for the future? That is now more important than ever due to the fact that we have a crisis in housing.
