My Experience at Summer Jam 6
I had my sights set on attending a fighting game tournament ever since I seriously picked up Mortal Kombat 9 a few months back. I attempted to go to local tournaments, but bad luck set in and I was unable to attend. This past weekend I decided to attend Summer Jam 6, a tournament run out of Philadelphia, PA put on by Big E. Obviously Mortal Kombat was not a headlining game at the tournament with games such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom and Street Fighter 4 getting upwards of 100 entrants. It was nice to see Mortal Kombat included in the tournament at all.
My girlfriend and I packed out bags and set out on our journey at around 10 A.M. Eastern on Friday morning. The trip was grueling, a six-hour drive does not seem long until your about three hours in. We made it through all the tolls and traffic of New York, and the Jersey Turnpike only stopping once. Our arrival at the Sheraton Suites by the Philadelphia Airport came at about 5 P.M. Eastern on Friday afternoon. We checked in and were pleasantly surprised by how nice the hotel/venue was. The night wound down after we got something to eat and I was finally able to get some casuals in before the tournament began on Saturday.
Joker8417, a player from South Carolina, drove about ten hours to Philadelphia for a tournament that had under 40 entrants. Props to him for going through with that when he very well could have went to MLG Raleigh and saved himself some money and trouble. We played for around three hours on Friday night, he gave me a run for my money with Noob Saibot, Jax and Quan Chi. He was one of the nicest and accommodating guys I met all weekend and gave me some really intense matches. Huge props to him for helping me understand the game better and placing fairly high in the tournament.
The tournament was the next day, my girlfriend and I headed down to the venue at about 10:30 A.M. and we were greeted by the Mortal Kombat/King of Fighters room. The tournament was organized and run extremely well overall, however it did take quite a while to get things going. Props to guys like Shock for keeping MK alive at these major tournaments while MK also gets love over at MLG. At about 3 P.M. or so the MK room cleared out for registration. The turnout ended up being 34, which was about what I thought it would be. We then headed back to the MK room, where I played a very tough Smoke player named Matix. We had some great matches and he handed me a beating for the majority of the three or so hours that we played.
Anyway, getting to the tournament. SwiftTomHanks handled the commentary and announced the match-ups. I drew NYChrisG as my first opponent, needless to say I was not too happy. The funny thing about my first match was that I had joked about getting Chris G first before even knowing that he would be there. For someone who doesn't play the game, he kicked my ass. His Reptile is really hard to decipher when he mixes up his dashes with his slides so well. My highlight of the tournament was taking a round from him. I was able to space him out in the second round of our first match and full-combo him off of B3 with Johnny Cage several times. Ultimately I lost the match 2-0 and was knocked down to the losers bracket.
Not too long after, my second opponent was announced. I would play Matix in losers bracket. The guy I played casuals with for three hours earlier in the day was my next opponent. Again, I was not happy because I was fairly confident that he would know all of my gimmicks and would have no trouble poking out of my pressure and getting his resets off with Smoke. My pokes were not working for me and he full-combo'd me on more than one occasion. He 2-0'd me taking every round. Just as fast as my day began, it ended. I was not down on myself, I wouldn't that say tournament nerves got to me. It was my first tournament and I went purely for the experience.
I gained a lot of knowledge about this game over the weekend. Overall I had an awesome time at this tournament for what it's worth. It's unfortunate that not many people play at these tournaments because Mortal Kombat is an excellent game and the matches rarely ever disappoint. Hopefully MLG can keep this game alive and possibly even breathe new life into it. This community also shows a lot of love to the game and is keeping it alive as well.
Thanks to Shock, Joker, Matix, SwiftTomHanks, Pherleece and everyone else for making this past weekend a pleasant experience. I'm sorry I wasn't able to meet everyone at the tournament, but I'm sure I'll be out to these more often when I am able to. My next tournament appearance will come at the end of September at the Game Underground Tournament Spectacular. It is Massachusetts' first major so it should be a good one. Stay tuned for more info on this tournament and others when pertinent details are available.
