PRINCESS NOKIA: G.O.A.T SONG REVIEW
Rating: 8/10
Princess Nokia is rap’s best kept secret. She is completely unashamed and her style is fresh, new and intriguing. On her new track ‘G.O.A.T.’ she establishes the following- “I ain't the best, but damn I'm the best”. G.O.A.T is the underground banger that is pulsating with heavy bars, heart-shaking bass, and strong drum breaks. The drum breaks provide a good ebb-and-flow rhythm for Nokia to rap over smoothly, and she uses every second of the song well. Nokia lays down bars that are not essentially in delivery, but her lyrics are well thought and heavy-hitting. Princess Nokia has rightly showed herself to be a force to be reckoned with, and simplicity is not in her vocabulary. Her raps are complex and intricate, and easy to relate to. Princess Nokia has served a true banger that needs to be heard, and her sound goes beyond her NYC-inspired aesthetic. Her raps are as gritty and as unapologetic as she is, and she may very well be bringing more fire to the rap scene. The real question is if rap will be able to handle it.

Praise for Hip Hop Heresies
I would like to thank Alex Weheliye & Cynthia Young for these glowing words about my forthcoming book (June 28, 2022). Please pre-order here: https://nyupress.org/9781479808182/hip-hop-heresies/ Finally (deep heavy sigh of relief, followed by loud cheers of ‘yes, yesssss, y’all’) we have a book about NYC hip-hop culture that is as queerly heretical as the genre itself. Challenging the cishetero masculinist narratives usually projected onto hip-hop culture, Shanté Paradigm Smalls beautifully and heretically mashes up Black aesthetics, queer aesthetics, and hip hop aesthetics. Hip Hop Heresies is poised to irrevocably change the parameters of hip-hop scholarship. ~Alexander Ghedi Weheliye, Northwestern University Quite simply a tour de force. Like Tricia Rose's classic Black Noise, this book is a field-defining game-changer. Challenging hip hop’s traditional origin story, Smalls tears down, brick-by-brick, the well-worn narratives about the genre's relationship to blackness, masculinity, and heterosexuality. In innovative readings of film, visual art, and music, Smalls takes us into the formative spaces where people of all genders, sexualities and races co-mingle and co-create. In the process, Smalls constructs a new archive in which queer aesthetics, gender play, and categorical instability fuel hip hop's more transgressive tendencies. Highly readable, theoretically sophisticated, and utterly persuasive, Hip Hop Heresies is essential reading for hip hop fans and critics, as well as anyone interested in U.S. popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. ~Cynthia A. Young, Pennsylvania State University
