Main Cast OC Picrews

Zara is the POV character of the first book, The Glass Lament. Her jewelry here isn’t accurate but this particular Picrew got closest. The red sun/burning moon represents the curse Zara and her people believe she’s inflicted with.

Nyela is half-human and half-Thashras. This Picrew allowed me to split skin color down the middle, but her hair and facial markings would be split as well (contrasting on opposite sides), her eyes would be darker, and none of the mouths quite fit her. Her teeth would be obsidian-black. Btw not all Thashras hybrids look like her - they come in many colors and patterns.

(I changed Picrews for the next few because they had more of the options I wanted.)

Liriloc is a Dracai’seng, though his name among humans is Jakobi. No Picrew I found could capture his sharp facial features, but this one had pretty accurate horns. The flowers represent his love of gardening and his plant magic.

Samèol is Jakobi’s older brother, a half-Dracai’seng, and a POV character of his own prequel. He has scars on his chest and back and was blinded in one eye; he uses a prosthetic one, but it’s mostly hidden by his paralyzed eyelid.

Rusef is Samèol’s love interest and another POV character in the prequel. His eyes were dyed permanently red by an alchemical experiment gone wrong (he blames his sister for that). Also his hair should be black but this Picrew just had really dark brown hair.

Snippet: A Voice to Raise an Army

From Book 2, Chimera's Lament. While in the lawless Noclium, Nyela and her new ally, an assassin called the Magpie, find a mural of a dead hero that Nyela has heard of before.

The wall had crumbled to smithereens at one end, but through patches of gray moss Nyela could make out a fresco at least twice her height. It depicted a lithe fair-skinned person reclining on a couch, draped in furs and silks of russet, cream, and gold. Their profile reminded her of a Dracai’seng with its long angles and high cheekbones, waves of chestnut hair flowing into a crest down their nape, but they had no horns. One hand raised a chalice toward their lips, curved in a taunting half-smile. Though faded, their eye was the bright green of summer.

Words had been painted beside the chalice:

A VOICE TO RAISE AN ARMY

The letters were still bold and dark, as though recently given a fresh coat. Nyela could think of no reason why, but this mural of a stranger, its colors leached by time, struck a deep ache in her chest.

The Magpie’s voice pulled her away. “Even down here, in the Noclium's rot, people had faith in Sable.”

Nyela drew a breath. She recognized that name. “Sable? The courtesan?”

“Yes. The most beloved poet in Kalestyj.” He came to her side and stared up at the mural, his eye unreadable. “It’s said that their songs lulled the Court of Kalestyj into a time of peace, but Sable knew it would not last. They promised to forever end the Court’s tyranny in Faanbér. Northern peoples had long suffered under the corrupt lords and they would gladly follow Sable in revolt. They prepared for years. But just as rebellion ignited...”

“Sable died,” Nyela murmured, a chill like meltwater down her spine. "When the Nemesi attacked."

The Magpie looked at her sidelong. “How do you know that?”

“Jakobi claimed that his brother was a courtesan called Sable. The Nemesi hunted him for his Dracai’seng blood.” Surely the Nemesi had had good reason. They must have feared that Sable would introduce more chaos to Faanbér by overthrowing the Court.

And yet… I betrayed Jakobi to his brother's murderers.

“Really?" the Magpie said. “His brother? How interesting.” He sighed and turned from the mural, shaking his head. “Guides, it really was a shame I had to kill him.”

Nyela's brain skimmed over his words, not quite registering. Then she whirled toward his departing back and said sharply, “Pardon?”

“Your friend was wrong.” The Magpie spoke soft as eiderdown. “The Nemesi didn’t kill Sable. I did.”

Happy STS! This might sound grim, but what kind of funeral or celebration of life do your OCs want when they pass?

Ollo, happy STS! This ask got me thinking bc I hadn't really considered this before, except for a couple characters.

Zara - to be wrapped in a sunthread tapestry, woven by her own hands and decorated with beloved objects and proverbs by her family. Then she would be entombed with her ancestors in the burial mounds near her village. She would want her family to dance and remember her with stories of love and laughter, rather than the disappointment and fear that some feel toward her.

Jakobi - to be interred in a garden, anywhere really, and become one with the plants that are so important to him. He'd want it to be a quiet, private ceremony with only the people who were closest to him present. His books and research would be donated to the monks who helped raise him; they can hold their own funeral/celebration as they see fit.

Saméol - to be cremated. Half his ashes would be scattered on Mount Illysar, overlooking the western valley where he was born, by his brother Jakobi; the other half would be scattered in the eastern sea near Lopenya's coast, where he had built a new life, by his partner Rusef and their friends.

Nyela - for her it would be an honor to die on the battlefield and be left there for the animals she so loves, or buried in a mass grave with the bodies of other fallen. No one needs to say any words for her; her actions matter more. As a lifelong soldier this is all she knows.

Happy STS! What are some hobbies that your characters enjoy?

Happy STS! My characters have a variety of hobbies.

Zara enjoys cooking and telepathically weaving stories in the air with glowing gold sunthread. Jakobi likes reading and gardening. By night Nyela stargazes and by day she trains for combat with her silurg (a reptilian mount she rides into battle).

Saméol can sing, dance, and play a couple stringed instruments; he also collects little trinkets and knicknacks. Rusef paints and sails, sometimes both at the same time.
