Nyonya Dumpling (娘惹粽子)
Nyonya Dumpling is one of the Nyonya cuisine and traditional food in Malaysia. It is made by Chinese Peranakan, the biggest group of Peranakan in Malaysia. Nyonya cuisine also known as ‘Peranakan cuisine’. The culture of the Nyonya was started from 15th century in Malaysia. This food represents the combination with different culture and innovation as most of the Peranakan came from different background and races.
Besides, the taste of Nyonya Dumplings is different with the Chinese dumplings, it taste is more sweets and less salty compare with Chinese dumplings. This is due to the dumpling ingredient used by Chinese Peranakan and Chinese is different. Nyonya dumplings is made by preserved of winter melon strips and soybean paste while Chinese dumplings is made by pork. Furthermore, the Nyonya dumplings usually can be saw on Dragon Boat Festival (5th day of the 5th lunar month) which same with Chinese dumplings. It also can be a gift that exchanged between two families in wedding ceremony.
