If you’re like me and not going to watch a GREASE sing-a-long instead of @TheTonyAwards, then let’s take a look back at previous Broadway seasons and African-American creatives who’ve been honored as well as glaring omissions throughout the years. As we all seek out ways to not only improve ourselves but also the lives of those around us, Broadway is in need of some soul-searching as well. As you can see, strides have been made in acknowledging the stellar contribution of African-Americans on Broadway, but the bar was pretty low to begin with (0.38 nominees per year till 1960). The work is not done yet as we all work toward ensuring race is never a factor in whether someone makes it or not. The biggest standout to me is the 44-year drought since the last black composer or lyricist won for Best Score. THE WIZ was and is a fun and delightful musical, but certainly there have been great musicians since then worthy of the top honor. Note: Best Play, Musical, and Revival awards go to the producers. So while @onceislandbway featured an all-POC cast and was also nominated and won for Best Revival of a Musical, it was an all-white lead producing team.⠀ ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ⠀ #TonysSoWhite #tonyawards #broadway #broadwayhistory #nytheater #musicaltheater #broadwayplay #Bwaymusical #broadwayshow #awardwinners #tonynominations #tonywinner #whyillnevermakeit #blackonbroadway #blm #allblackcast (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBJIepADJat/?igshid=ia9014gt7g0c
