After returning from the Great War in 1919, and finding no work in his native Mississippi, Maxwell Bailey took a train west. Not really interested in the hustle and bustle of San Francisco, he settled in the small town of Hill Valley, selling his 1914 Packard for a piece of land and a brick building on the outskirts of town. In a little under four months, using every last nickel in his pocket, Max Berry turned an old sawmill into “The Five Spot.”
His fellow black and brown travelers on the road of the Great Migration finally had a place to hang, drink (covertly during Prohibition), and listen to some great music.
