Kayla’s patience was wearing thin, and if anyone was to blame, it was Mr. Hayes. Yesterday, he had returned their test scores from their first exam, and Kayla’s heart had nearly leapt out of her chest. In that moment, all the late nights came rushing back: weeks of studying, surviving on nothing but coffee and energy drinks. The headaches, the unreasonable amounts of reading and writing she had done, hadn’t been worth it. She failed. She had tried not to let it get to her, but then today she raised her hand in class, only to be harshly dismissed as incorrect. Suddenly, all those online reviews of Mr. Hayes made perfect sense: “IF YOU’RE READING THIS DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!” Kayla had reached her limit. If she kept getting bad grades, this course would only drag her down, and the last thing she wanted was for her GPA to drop. Being in a confined space with the devil himself wasn’t on her to-do list for today, but it had to be done. She had had enough.
