I was thinking about water in Silksong. It was already clear to me that water and its purity has a lot of symbolic meaning, but I got the itch to make some data points. So I decided to go over the map, labeling all the places with normal and maggot water, and share it here.
On this map, the Citadel’s influence on Pharloom is clear. The areas most obviously harmed by it are all deprived of clean water; Bilewater is horrifically polluted, Karak is a desert, Verdania goes from a lush place with plentiful streams and lakes to a dry, empty cave. The Underworks, Slab, and Deep Docks all lack water for their workers (with the exception of the Docks sauna). Even the expansive waters of Greymoor, according to Varga, are “filthy”. The most plentiful waters are in areas far from the Citadel, but even they are contaminated with silk, according to a Marrow lore tablet (it also mentions silk in the air, tying it to the Citadel's air pollution as well).
But the Citadel itself has no shortage of fresh water. Water for steam-powered machines, for draining its vast pollution, or simply for the enjoyment of its people. When Loam speaks about the glory of the Citadel, he speaks of “Fresh water for all, much as can drink!” alongside clean air as its most incredible traits. Its vast supply of water comes at the expense of the regions around it, and that monopoly makes it all the more appealing for the desperate workers and pilgrims. But even here, the majority of the water is in the High Halls, the most opulent and esteemed area, indicating further stratification within the Citadel's gilded halls.
But where does Pharloom’s water come from? It’s hard to trace the flow of water on a 2D map like this, but we can make some educated guesses. (I considered the idea that some areas may be fed by aquifers or other, unseen sources of water, but the magma layer just below Pharloom means there’s not much room for water. And plus, I’d have no way to map such a thing.)
Here is my impression of Pharloom’s watershed at the moment. It’s clear that the Pale Lake is upstream of Bilewater, which flows further into Sinner's Road and Greymoor. If we assume Shellwood and Far Fields are downstream of Greymoor, the Citadel’s pollution would affect nearly all of Pharloom, in diluted form.
It’s unclear where the snowmelt from Mt. Fay goes, but I believe it either flows down to Shellwood and Moss Grotto (bypassing Karak and the Blasted Steps) or it is pumped into the Citadel. Perhaps this was the source of Karak’s river, and that the Citadel drained or diverted it to sate its vast appetite for water. Whether this was purposefully done to weaken a rival or simply the result of the Citadel’s hunger, the end result is the same.
This map also reinforced an observation I previous had, which is that an enormous amount of Pharloom is artificial, or so heavily built-up that little of the original ecosystem remains. Not only does the Citadel take up a huge chunk of the map, it forces Pharloom's waters to flow around and through it, constricting the flow of water for its benefit. It's hard to imagine Pharloom before its construction.
Anyway, if anyone has knowledge or ideas to share, I'd love to hear them. Pharloom feels like such a living place, and considering the ecology of it is fascinating.
