These are the beings that have replaced Witches in the new world following Madoka’s law. They act as the new enemies that magical girls (Puella Magi) must fight and gather Grief Cubes from in order to clean their Soul Gems. They have a masculine appearance resembling Monks with artifacts on their head that make them look glitched out. Their origin isn’t fully explained aside from a mention pointing that they are born from people’s negative emotions.

There’s several types of them aside from the normal ones, like the ‘Enlighted Wraith’ and the ‘Mokhsa Wraith.’ All known ones are pictured in the page above.

They seem to gather in groups as a sort of colony. Particulary when they’re trying to defend the special being ‘Mokhsa Wraith.’ They cannot be seen by normal people.

Their presences carry around some kind of miasma. In the case of the Mohska Wraith’s, it’s so horribly cold that it can freeze Tomoe Mami’s ribbons.

Not much is know about the Mokhsa Wraith, but it is said that if it isn’t defeated it will bring disaster. It seems to prefer staying hidden, and will disappear upon being caught if not defeated in time.

They feed on their victim’s emotions. When this happens, the victim may be trapped in a cube-like cage and multiple Wraiths can fed off from just one. What happens if this process is complete is still unknown.

They can also do the above to Puella Magi with ‘weakened’ hearts. This is said to be an unspeakably terrifying experience for them. A Puella Magi can be strong enough to break from it.

**They appear to be capable of obtaining magic and memories through absoring the power / emotions of certain magical girls. This is a major plot point in Wraith Arc and what leads to Wraiths taking an human form. An example of this is the third pic showing Wraith Madoka, and a special case for it presents itself as a Wraith. Only Homura is capable of seeing it as Madoka -- the others see it as the typical doll Wraith. While its true intentions are not well known, it seems to be still taking advantage of her all the same, however.

Wraiths taking an human form are manipulative. Their intentions continue to primarily line in consuming the emotions of magical girls or humans, tricking said person into believing they’re the ‘real’ one and push them into despair - even sacrificing numbers for that sake. Upon being attacked / found out, they will reveal their true form which is a disembodied doll with typical wraith particles and eyes.

** Wraith Madoka says the nature of emotions is quite dangerous to the world, and that the reason the Wraiths exist is to take it and turn it into a safe form (the Grief Cubes)
