PAST

Michael’s home life had always been rocky. His mother had major commitment issues, constantly breaking up with her boyfriend or quitting her job, something that made it incredibly difficult when it came to raising a family. His father wasn’t in the picture. In fact, he had no idea who the man was. His mother had gotten pregnant with him after a one night stand when she was 16, something that prevented her from going to college and lead to her being resentful of his existence. She ignored him, mostly, spending the majority of her time at parties or in her bedroom with a man that he was never allowed to meet. Her negligence forced him, from a young age, to learn to take care of his four younger siblings (all of whom did not know their father). He became a father figure to them, helping them with their homework and making sure they always had enough food, even if it meant that he would go hungry. Over the years, he built up a wall of sarcasm, jokes, and anger. While he rarely ever got angry if anything was said to him, instead giving a snarky response, his anger flared if anyone said or did anything to his siblings. His protectiveness annoyed his siblings greatly, especially Sarah who often had boys chased away by him if he thought they weren’t good enough for her.

When graduation came around, his mother didn’t attend. Despite having spent his entire life without her in it, it still hurt. Having gotten a job when he was sixteen in order to support the family, he knew that he couldn’t leave the house. His siblings needed him there and even though Sarah had a job as well, he still knew he had to help. College came second compared to his family. Everything, including school, relationships, and his own health, came second. While he had many friends (including his best friend, Christopher Rivera), his romantic relationships were always very short as he was always having to cancel plans in order to help his siblings out. This was something that worried him greatly, as he really didn’t want to end up like his mother. He wanted to be better than her. He only ever shared this fear with Christopher. Christopher was the only person he ever confided, in actually. He would never worry his siblings with his problems and showing weakness to anyone else was, in his eyes, the equivalent of running into a pack of starving wolves.

PRESENT

Michael had been in the mall with his siblings when the shooting happened, having taken them to the food court for dinner since nothing was in the refrigerator. He’d been ordering when it happened and was separated from them in the chaos. When he found them after the shooter had been killed, Emily had been shot in the shoulder and Daniel was trying to stop the bleeding. Paramedics had rushed her off to the hospital and Michael had been tasked with the challenge of comforting his three siblings, especially Elizabeth (her twin sister) who had bullied the shooter and had been one of the shooter’s targets.
