Foolproof

I have a very specific formula for writing

it’s absolutely foolproof

unless of course

I have no ideas

or I’m tired

or even just a little grouchy

it’s a fabulous formula

and it has yet

to let me down

it begins with

caffeine

ideally poured

by someone other than myself

because if I try to write at home

I inevitably get distracted

by a messy desk

or a room whose fengshui will most definitely be improved

if I move every single piece of furniture

right that very second

or even

by the never-ending

pile of laundry or dishes

that I should probably stop putting off

and let’s be honest

if I’m willingly cleaning

rather than writing

the writer’s block is essentially

a mountain

and I should probably

just give up

so really

I guess the formula begins

with leaving my house

so first I drive away

and then I get the coffee

and then I write

after

of course

browsing Facebook and Tumblr

maybe reading someone else’s writing

for a little bit

but then

THEN

I’m ready to write

usually

or at the very least

I’ve left a pile of laundry behind in my house

and spend $8 on a latte

so I really probably should

get around to writing

which is when

I need to involve

the next level of the fabulous foolproof formula

which

of course

is complaining to my best friend

about not being able to write

and after she is extremely sympathetic

to my pathetic state

and the careful application

of writing to read

memes

or pictures of handsome celebrities

I buckle down

give myself a time limit

and start writing away

knowing that she expects to read something new

in the next 15-20 minutes

and you know what?

that usually does it

it might take an extra latte

or an extended period of whining

but sooner or later

I find a way

to put words on the page

they aren’t always very good

but that’s okay

I can always edit them

tomorrow
