This week is Open Access Week! You can take action by asking your Senators and Rep. to support the Fair Access to Science and Technology Research Act (FASTR). The legislation would ensure that scientific research paid for by tax dollars can be freely accessed by taxpayers!

Open Access Week Spotlight:  OpenStax  

Textbooks, peer-reviewed and free, from the nonprofit based at Rice University.  The OpenStax mission: “to improve student access to education. Our first openly licensed college textbook was published in 2012, and our library since scaled to more than 20 books for college and AP courses used by hundreds of thousands of students.”

Open Access Week spotlight: PLOS.org and Science Advances

“PLOS was founded in 2001 as a nonprofit Open Access publisher, innovator and advocacy organization with a mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication.” PLOS now publishes seven journals. “Science Advances is the offspring of Science, created by the opportunities and imperatives of digital, open access publishing.” One aim of Science Advances is to “promote and uphold the highest standards in the conduct and communication of scientific research.”
