good news is that work responded to my I Won't Be Doing That, Actually email with "ah. that is entirely reasonable. we did not know you were away and also it was not communicated to us that you had been told you would have four weeks for this project. we will adjust the timeline." sometimes you do just gotta tell people you can't do a thing rather than torturing yourself trying to make the impossible happen!!

i don't know whether it's cos i hit 30 this year or just cos i hit burnout but i have hit the point of absolutely not giving a fuck where like... work will show up in my inbox with an unreasonable deadline that three years ago i would have tried to meet and i just email them back immediately and say "unfortunately i will not be able to meet that deadline. how far can you extend it" because i am not fucking doing this any more

i used to be the person who worked flat out and met every single deadline no matter how tight but honestly. this job constantly fucks me over where they're always months late returning work to me and then expect me to turn it around quickly so i'm done being the only one who has to work to schedule. if they can't keep on time then i won't either and i'm not even going to pretend i will. i've a project we agreed i'd get 4 weeks for, they've given me 2 with my welsh exam slap bang in the middle and a holiday (minus computer) over one of them. so that's not going to work and i've told them that cos no i'm not failing my welsh exam or giving up my holiday for you guys giving me half the allotted time two months after you were supposed to give it to me

i suspect this is not going to be very good for my career in the long run but i'm honestly not sure if i give a fuck

i don't drag stuff out unnecessarily but i'm not working myself into the ground for your unreasonable schedules. i set out my availability and we agreed to a timeline and it is not my problem if you guys can't stick to it. "oh we'll have to push the whole project if you do that" then push it. the amount you pay me isn't enough for me to work myself into the ground to make things run to time. truly can't believe i used to do so for even less money than i earn now

#honestly if i didn't have ongoing / recurring contracts here i would be trying to find them with an org that can actually keep to a schedule #cos it is driving me nuts #it makes everything 10x more stressful and harder to deal with than it needs to be #if things just showed up on time then i would return them on time because i set aside that time to work on it.#but if they show up late and coincide with other projects/jobs/commitments then yes! i will be late returning them! cos i don't have time!#do they think i am in storage just waiting for them to drop it whenever they feel like it!!#that i have nothing else going on in my life !! that i have no other jobs to juggle !!#obair

there IS nothing like an unsatisfactory freelance contract to realise your previous exploitative contract was miles better than you realised. was the pay terrible? yes. but at least they fucking communicated

#well they did until my project lead left #then it went downhill #which is one reason I moved on #obair

on the plus side my other job said they're going to approve my full expenses for something recently (£180) not partial expenses as i feared (£150). has to go through another person to be approved but I might get an extra £30 back which I could do with this month. yay

#now if delay repay would repay my delay that would make all of my trains this month much cheaper #obair

it's a reciprocal thing really. I've been doing this job for like. idk. six years. and one of the previous organisations I worked with was nearly always punctual with getting projects to me, and would communicate when they weren't going to be so i could adjust my plans. so, in return, I got projects back to them on time, even though some of the turnarounds were very fast. once or twice they were late in ways that screwed me over and i grumbled about it but i did not know how lucky I was. this one is always 6-10 weeks late with everything and I'm just left hanging without any idea when it's going to turn up, and then it shows up right when I'm in the thick of it with my other job. obviously I can't turn that around as fast as they want, they missed my entire window of availability and gave me no opportunity to plan ahead to ensure I was free, like

if you want me to be on time you have to be on time. if you want me to have a clear schedule you need to tell me when the schedule needs to be clear and then STICK TO IT
