OJI Blog # 6| Day 6 of 9
It is February 19, 2018 and today is our 6th day in our work immersion. I had a few background and knowledge about the use and parts of the microscope for we've tackled them during junior high school and last school year, but unfortunately we did not have a chance to really practice the proper use of the microscope.
Today was lucky, with the help of nong Noelle Narte, a Medichal Technologist, we had the oppurtunity to experience how to operate a microscope.
First, he named the different parts of the microscope and showed us how to use as well as its functions. Then by using one blood sample, he showed us the difference between the objective lenses. The ocular or eyepiece of the microscope itself has already 10x magnification. Accordingly, the scanner (red) has 4x magnification resulting 40x total of magnification, the low power objective (yellow) in the other hand has 10x magnification resulting in 100x total of magnification. The next objective lense is the high power objective (blue) which has 40x magnification that results in 400x magnification. Lastly, the white objective lense or the oil immersion objective has 100x magnification which means it gives 1000x total of magnification, and in order to properly use it we need to apply oil in the specimen.
In order for us to have a full experience, nong Noelle gave us an activity where we should apply what he have taught us. It may be a simple activity but it was memorable because of the new learnings that I will greatly cherish for the rest of my journey in this field.
