The Candle
A flicker of wax and wick illuminates an entire room.
Lit to celebrate both epic milestones and excursions, but also spark festive feeling.
Or to spread a glimmer of an eerie, haunting, fearing, burning sensation.
Aiding a traveler’s articulate venture through a twilight haze.
Ingeniously and resourcefully experimented with since the early 10th century BCE,
The Ancient Egyptians tampered with soaking reeds into meticulously melted tallow,
Generating a millennia’s worth of valuable craft for each forthcoming civilization.
The sacred burning of cattle fat and installation of flax, hemp, and cotton stems.
An innovative yet ageless substitute for the sun’s vitality.
While the flame aids Ebenezer Scrooge through the darkness of Christmas Past,
As well as marking its strong presence at birth, death, and resurrection,
The epitomizing versatility of the taper’s incantation can suggest eternal life of the Holy Son,
Or simply the wishful aging-up of an ecstatic adolescent.
“For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness,”
A miniscule tea light shedding its gift across even a fraction of a murky room.
Hope concealed inside a metal can and braided cotton, igniting faith in an enlightened future.
Thus, enriching the days of others, for it will bring inner joy.
Fashioned with soy, gel, paraffin, palm, and beeswax,
Coming in an endless array of tapers, pillars, votives, and tea lights,
With methodically studied properties to ease stress or create a vibrant atmosphere,
The possibilities for mankind’s newest and brightest modification are vast.
The pop of warm gold amid total darkness brings certainty to a soul's volatile existence.
But what shall become of mortal beings if all light is lost?
The slow-burning wax must eventually wish the world goodbye,
Fading away into a devoid abyss at the glass container’s base, unseen to the human eye.
I crave you. To look you, touch you, devour you The soft touch of you on my fingertips feels heavenly Your scent brings back so many memories... I desire you. To slowly unravel you Beginning to end Know you, from within while my chest rises and fall in excitement from before we even start until we’re through. -M.L. / Love Story - An Object Poem • Photographer: @heftiba.co.uk unsplash.com/heftiba • #mypensieve #booklovers #bookstagram #objectpoem #PoetryFromAtoZ #AtoZChallenge #napowrimo2018 #napowrimo #photographysouls #photographylover #ig_great_pics #unsplash #photographyislife #writingcommunity #poetrycommunity #poetry #poetryisnotdead #creativewriting #womenwhowrite #lovenotes #lovequotes #lovepoems #lovepoetry #poetrylovers #quoteoftheday #qotd
