CHARACTER BACKSTORY.
Bobby grew up in a rather small family. It was just him, his older sister Joy, and his parents Phoebe and Marcus. Phoebe passed away when Bobby was at too young an age to really remember her, so all memories and feelings he really has towards her was received through stories told by his sister and father. Unfortunately with her passing, the three soon had to move into a small apartment, and with Marcus always at work to pay all the bills, rent, debt, and tuition, Bobby and Joy spent a lot of time alone together, leaving them to not necessarily raise themselves, but make each other a vital aid in the other’s growth as a person.
Bobby never really knew where he “fit”, growing up. And in turn, he wasn’t really sure what he wanted to be when he grew up. Since he was never really part of a clique, he was sort of influenced by everything he came across, and was definitely one of those kids who wanted to be just about everything while growing up. It wasn’t until late in his high school career that a good relationship with one of his teachers inspired him to want to pursue a career in teaching himself.
The decision to move across an ocean for school was definitely a tough one for Bobby. Due to how much he grew up and how each member of his family relied on each other, family was greatly important to him. This would be the first time he was going to be away from his family all his life, he wasn’t sure how he was going to handle it. However, he decided that while he was in England, he’d call his father and sister via Skype way more often than he needed to. He didn’t want to give them the feeling that he was leaving him. They lost a wife and a mother, they didn’t need to lose a son a brother too. If they had constant communication, then it’d basically be like nothing had changed, right?
PERSONALITY.
Gentle - Despite not growing up with a mother’s touch, Bobby developed as a very kind and gentle soul. He’s the typical nice and quiet guy, but it’s not a bad thing. He’d never hurt a fly, let alone a human soul. He mostly puts others’ feelings before his own, and is quite caring to almost everyone he meets.
Timid - Bobby was a very fearful child, and he grew up pretty much without a backbone. He was bullied in school as a child, which didn’t help with his confidence at all. He’s a bit better now, but he’s still really shy and nervous in certain situations.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONS.
Why did you choose the University of Manchester? You know, I actually have no idea. I mean, family is super important for me, but there’s always been something about England that has drawn me to it. Applying here was a long shot, but once I found out I got accepted, I couldn’t say no.
How did you end up in Sociology? It was recommended for me to take. They said that learning about social behaviors would be beneficial as a teacher, so that way I could understand my future students better.
How do you feel about the experiment? I kind of like it. It’s nice to be able to let out all your feelings, and since it’s all anonymous, you can’t really be judged by anyone, you know?
PARTNER INTERACTION.
So I’m not even Jewish or anything, but I was walking by a synagogue and it was basically built of glass so I looked inside, and I saw this really interesting quote. It said “Pray as if everything depended on God, act as if everything depended on you.” I guess the first part all really depends on whether or not you believe in God, or any god, in the first place, but I really like that second part. Growing up with a dad who worked his ass off to make sure that Joy and I were okay really makes me remember that if you want something, you gotta work for it, and work hard. You can’t just expect things to be handed to you on a silver platter. That’s why I’ve always hated My Super Sweet 16. Those kids got everything and they were LITERALLY only 15/16. Like, they were getting the biggest cars before they’re even allowed to drive. And then they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a birthday party and they’re cry because their dress isn’t the perfect shade of coral or something. Like that’s such bullshit. (Are we allowed to curse in these letters? I don’t know. Hopefully these don’t get monitored.) Do you know what I did for my sweet 16? I went to Applebee’s with my dad, Joy, and maybe like 3 or 4 of my friends. God, it just really pisses me off how whiny rich kids are and how they just expect everyone to do everything for them.
Okay, I just realized that that went from talking about a Jewish passage to ranting about My Super Sweet 16. Only I would do that, would I? I’ll change the subject.
So I was walking by the Quad today and I saw that redhead I was telling you about before. Elle. God, she’s beautiful. Not to mention nice, funny, honest but not in the bitchy kind of way, simple, and cute. Really cute. I just wish I had the courage to talk to her. Like it’s not like she’s that popular mean girl from high school that every guy wants and every girl wants to be. She’s just a regular, chill girl, and yet whenever I even think about her my legs turn to jelly and I can’t think right. I have such a high school crush on her, it’s ridiculous.
In other news, I’ve been sort of thinking about joining a fraternity. It’s not really my style, the whole idea of it, but I don’t know, maybe it’ll break me out of my shell a little, make myself a little more well known around the school. Maybe that’ll give me the confidence I need to go up and talk to Elle. Who knows.
Anyways, that’s probably enough about me for this letter, what’s new with you?
