Jordan!! After reading about Shadowed Smiles and your Hold Your Misery (Obscurial Harry AU), it got me thinking about Obscurial!Harry ending up in the crossover CS/YBTM (IBTY). If I remember correctly, in the movies, the children and Credence used to live in pain at certain points because of their condition. And now I’m thinking about Harry, who despite not dying and finding balance with this force inside him, still has the pain to deal with — and now the time travel?? God, imagine the angst of this!! How do you think Nathan!Harry, Hadrian, and Harriet would react to this version of them — one who’s an Obscurial?

I’d say the trio would be both terribly sad and incredibly angry to see a version of themselves that was an Obscurial. We’ve already gotten some of ybtm!Harry’s musings on his chances of being an Obscurial, and while it might not hit as close to home for Hadrian or Harriet (given their childhoods were largely magic-positive), the two of them would still be wroth at the idea.

I’d say Obscurial!Harry would be both baffled and uncomfortable at the protectiveness from his other selves. There might also be an element of jealousy there, since these three got to experience magic without the sheer level of fear this Harry endured. His life has been hard, and painful, and full of the constant panic that he is a walking bomb.

Obscurial!Harry would take a long time to fall in with the others, much like a stray cat. But they’d definitely get him eventually, and from there, he’d know the joy that can come from being surrounded by the people who could understand him best.

The future speaks to Ruby Potter, and voices from beyond the Veil have joined in. If she can figure out how the hand needs to be played, she just might find the move that wins the game.

Obscurial!Harry Potter and Witchking!Jotun!Loki

An old Loki, already crowned King of Jotunheim. And teenytiny pre-Hogwarts!Harry, barely able to hold form, is attracted to this kernel of cool, soothing, solid Power that the large blue giant emits. And it helps him keep focused on this place now, instead of painpainpainhatehatehatewhyiseverythingwrong. So, Loki gets a teenytiny shadow following him. And eventually, he gets used to the child that's always on the peripheral of his vision, but never approaches.

Until one day, after fending off an attack made by that upstart princeling, Thor Odinson, the thorn in his side, he returns to his palace bleeding. Not badly enough to be lifethreatening, but enough to need some days to heal.

After he falls asleep on his bed that night, having taken care of his injuries, he wakes up in the middle of the night (or early in the morning, depending on how you look at it) to tiny, trembling hands stroking his bandaged side. Immediately his gaze zeroes on the small smoky form of the Shadow Child. And when a wavering voice whispers a question, "Who?" he gives the answer with an irritated scowl "Thor of Asgard, the pest". The Child nods solemnly. It pets the bandage a few more times, before dissipating on the spot, like mist in the wake of dawn.

Three days later he gets news that Asgard is in uproar. The great Hall of Odin is ravaged and crumbling, the king of Gods himself has succumbed to Odin's sleep, and Thor the Pest is nowhere to be found and the Shadow Child isn't around anymore.

A week later, the apparition returns. It radiates smug exhaustion as it settles back to Loki's sight, though a bit closer now than before.

Oooooh you’ve just reminded me of Hold Your Misery god I love that idea so much. What’s Harry been up to? Does his obscurial mess with his daily life? Is his obscurial reaching out to voldemort on purpose?

I've been having so many ideas, Skitty, it isn't even funny anymore 😂😅

I'm tossing up on what happens to Harry between the Dursleys 'accident' and when we see him again at eighteen. I was thinking a subplot is that he ended up falling in with some not so law-abiding people when he was a youngster. He was kind of adopted by a gang of some sorts, and many of them were intrigued by all the weird stuff that happened around Harry (since they can't see the obscurus whenever it popped out); and tried to use him as a 'weapon' in some ways during fights - to varying degrees of success. The shadows of those past connections are still hovering over him, and Harry's keeping his nose clean now, but yeah, as a kid he got mixed up in some shit and the only thing that kept him alive was his obscurus.

I love the idea that over time, Harry's obscurus gains a sort of sentience due to the horcrux, and a personality - to the point where Harry identifies it as its own separate entity and has conversations with it. He calls it Tom (or maybe Marvolo or Riddle, depending) because in some deep part of his brain the name felt right and it's the only thing it responds to. It is possessive of Harry, protective, and attacks what it deems to be threats.

'Tom' is still largely docile when they're in public and when Harry is at work - though that is mainly due to Harry's willpower and his ability to wrangle 'Tom'. But there are still plenty of moments where strange things happen around Harry. Windows rattle for no reason. Plates and cups can shatter randomly. People that anger him might be shoved away by nothing, or tripped, or just be overwhelmed by a sudden and inexplicable wave of fear.

It's hard, and Harry is constantly exhausted and grumpy at having to try and curb 'Tom's' instinctive and aggressive reactions to everything and everyone, so it makes it difficult to have any kind of deep or meaningful relationships or bonds.

As for Voldemort getting involved - it's not a conscious decision on Harry or 'Tom's' part to use their connection. In fact, 'Tom' is decidedly not happy the first few times Voldemort rocks up.

And Voldemort isn't pleased to learn that Harry Potter is his horcrux, or that the boy's obscurus has seemed to have merged with his soul shard.

He definitely hates that it apparently named itself, as well.
