Obsidian has a long history of being used in ritual, scrying work, spell casting, and ceremony. Black obsidian has (and continues to be) closely associated with the God Tezcatlipoca. Tezcatlipoca is associated with the night sky, divination, the earth, sorcery, and war. His name means Smoking Mirror, refering to the use of obsidian within shamanic and divination practices in his name. Revered by the Aztecs, Olmecs, Maya, and contemporary practictioners, Tezcatlipoca personifies the silent wind and thunderous war. He reminds us that life has cycles and that these cycles bring with them lessons and understanding. And that beyond these cycles exists our own personal will and Divine Contracts. Similarly, we can use scrying, divination work, and our connection with obsidian as forms of resistance and resilience. Obsidian pieces contain sacred webs of energy that carry within them crucial information for our own personal and collective co-evolutions. These channels exist outside of time and space and beyond systems of domination, control, and colonization. Obsidian helps us engage with and connect with the dark-side of our own psyche, our intergenerational past, and our interdependent future.
