“You got it, one more step.” Minji gripped her wrists tightly, ensuring her feet were firmly planted on the ground before they continued moving.
“You’re making me nervous.” She giggled anxiously, taking small steps as her members led her to the unknown.
“Don’t worry, you’ll love it.” She could hear the smile in Yoohyeon’s voice. “Okay, ready?”
“Yes!” She stomped her foot, feeling one girl untie the blindfold at the back of her head. The fabric fell, her eyes taking a second to adjust to the bright lights. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing when her vision came into focus.
Wonwoo stood perfectly tall across from her, hands behind his back, with a smile plastered.
Her eyes widened, hands coming up to cover her loud gasp that reverberated off the walls. “Wonwoo?”
“Happy birthday, Mira.” He revealed a box from behind his back, stepping towards her.
Tears welled up in her eyes, and her feet moved on their own. She launched herself at him, arms wrapping around his neck as she let out a cry. “You’re here!”
He embraced her as tightly as he could, his chin falling into the dip of her shoulder as he inhaled the scent of her. “I’m here.”
He lifted her off her feet, spinning her around in the air as she squealed. “I missed you, baby.”
Once he set her back on the ground, she pulled back to cup his face, her smile wide and eyes glassy. “I missed you more. But how are you here?”
“I requested this weekend off for you.” He grinned, leaning in to press a kiss to her forehead.
She clasped her hands together, bringing them to her mouth and practically hopping on her feet. “This is like the best present ever!”
“We’ve been planning it for months.” Wonwoo's eyes moved behind her, where she turned and found Minji and Yoohyeon smiling and waving at them.
“Thank you so much.” She blinked back her tears, wrapping her arms around his waist and she tipped her chin to her members.
“You do have one hour before you have to leave for your birthday cafe,” Minji reminded her.
“Right right, what will you do?” Mira turned to face Wonwoo, looking up into his eyes.
“I’ll visit my members and family while you’re gone. Then we’re going out for dinner.” He smiles, wiping the corner of her eye where a tear threatened to fall down her face.
She nods, finally reaching up on her toes to kiss him on the lips. Mira goes to run her fingers through his hair, only to remember that she doesn’t have much left to hold onto. Her cheeks flush as she pulls away, pressing her forehead to his chest in embarrassment. “I keep forgetting your hair.”
He pets her hair, chuckling. “Yeah, it takes a while getting used to.”
She brushes it up, trying to spike it but failing. “Let’s go to my room for a bit?”
She lifts her eyebrow, reaching for his hand and leading him down the hallway.
“Don’t get too carried away!” Minji shouted.
Mira snorted, pulling him into her bedroom before closing and locking the door behind her.
“You heard the woman-”
She rolled her eyes, throwing herself at him as she planted her lips on his. Wonwoo seemed taken off guard but quickly melted into the kiss. He tossed her present onto her bed, letting his hands fall to her hips.
“You don’t know how happy I am to see you.” She whispered with a smile against his lips.
“I think I might have an idea.” He bends his knees, his hands sliding down to grip the back of her thighs as he lifts her up. He delights in the sound of her giggles as she secures one arm around his neck, the other running up his bicep.
“Ooh…” Mira tilts her head, humming as she feels the pure muscle underneath her fingertips. “What do they have you doing in there?”
He takes a seat on her bed, holding her securely against his lap as he kisses her neck. “Now’s not the time to be naughty.”
“But I’ve missed you.” She cups his face between her hands, pecking his lips.
“Well that’s what tonight’s for,” Wonwoo smirks as reaches behind him, searching until he finds the box he had earlier. "Now, are you ready for your present?"
He presents the wrapped present to her, looking up to gauge her reaction.
She smiles, carefully grabbing the collar of his shirt and pulling him towards her with a mischievous grin. "I thought you were my present."
Wonwoo chuckles, reaching his hand up to cup her cheek. He cranes his neck forward to kiss her forehead. "You know my favorite thing to do is to spoil you."
She nods, blushing.
“Open it.”
She scoots to sit cross cross next to him, carefully tears the wrapping apart, making sure not to damage it in the process. She pulls the lid off with eagerness and squeals at the contents. Inside, there are plenty of self care items that she can’t wait to use. Rose petals and folded up pieces of paper are scattered everywhere. There’s also a book covered in brown craft paper, twine wrapping around it with a rose tucked underneath.
“Wonwoo!” Mira lets her hand rest on his knee, leaning forward to kiss his cheek. “This is so sweet. I love it!”
“These are notes I wrote for you.” He pulls a folded up piece of paper from the box, giving it to her. “I made sure to include plenty until I can make you more.”
She opened and read it, her eyes welling up with tears. The date and time is at the top, formatted like a diary entry that says how much he misses her when he can’t sleep at night.
“Don’t cry, you have your event soon.”
“Sorry!” She tilts her head back, trying to blink the tears away. “I’ve just missed you so much.”
“I missed you more, baby.”
Mira sighed, closing her eyes. “We've been doing pretty good so far, don’t you think?”
He smiles, nodding his head as he brushes her hair behind her ear. “You’ve been doing amazing. I, on the other hand, have been in agony.”
Wonwoo is fast to connect his lips to her neck, pressing her flat against the bed. She laughs as he attacks her with kisses all over her face and chest.
“I thought we weren’t supposed to get carried away!”
He groaned, pushing himself up with his hands. He pulled her up by her hands, letting out a big sigh as his shoulders slumped. He reached in to get the wrapped book out of the box. “Here is your homework for next month.”
“Homework?” She smirked, taking the book from him. She removed the rose that was tucked under the twine, bringing it to her nose to smell. “Where did you learn to wrap like this?”
Mira slapped her palm against her mouth, snickering as she realized the double meaning in her joke.
He shook his head, scratching the back of his neck as he leaned in closer to her. “You’re a goofball.”
She untied the twine before carefully ripping the paper to reveal a hardcover book that she had never heard of before, but it appeared familiar to her. It looked to be over five hundred pages, and she knew she was going to have the funnest time reading it.
“I bought it a long time ago and packed it with me. I’m not sure why I waited so long to read it, but it’s really beautiful and I knew you needed to read it too.”
She hugs the book to her chest, turning her head to smile at him. “Thank you, Wonwoo. I'll start it tonight.”
He pinches her cheek before finally reaching into his back pocket and pulling out a velvet box. “One last thing…”
He held it out for her, Mira taking it with caution. “What’s this?”
He motioned for her to open it.
She found the side that opened, pulling it up and being met with a necklace. Mira gasped at the way the diamonds sparkled at her. The chain itself was rose gold, but the pendant was shaped like a vine, the diamonds placed meticulously on the leaves.
"Oh my god." Her mouth gaped as she looked back up at him in disbelief. She wanted to put it on immediately and never take it off. "It's just… wow."
He carefully removed it from the box, watching as it dangled in the air. He motioned for her to turn. She obliged, his hands reaching over her and pulling the clasp apart. He secured the necklace at the back of her neck, turning her to face him. He smiles at her, holding her hands. “How do you like it?”
"It's beautiful," She looks down, running her fingertips over the diamond teardrop in between her collarbones. "Thank you."
Mira leans forward, smiling up at him as her hands squeeze his knee. Her eyes drift to his lips before leaning in and kissing him.
“Happy birthday, love.”
She had finished her birthday event and livestream, surprised to see that Wonwoo had texted her a location to come to. She assumed it was for dinner, so she didn’t bother searching up the address.
Her manager dropped her off at the restaurant, making sure that she had her bag and all her things. She saw no use for keeping a low profile, the ambience being romantically dim and lit with candles. She expected to see other families and couples at their own tables, but everything was cleared out. The only table occupied was seating Wonwoo, who quickly stood to his feet when he noticed her enter.
Mira looked down, seeing a trail of pink petals leading to him. Her smile stretched ear to ear as she made her way to her boyfriend, goosebumps forming on her screen.
“It’s crazy, I had a feeling I saw you earlier today.” Wonwoo opened his arms, grinning as she launched herself at him once again.
“You’re silly.” She chuckled, enveloping him in a tight hug, running her fingers over his buzz and swaying in his arms. “Did you rent out the place?”
“Yeah. Turns out the manager is a huge fan.” He rubs his palm against her lower back, leaning back to get a good look at her. He brushed her hair behind her ear, giving her forehead a kiss. “Come on.”
“You’re making me really wish I was wearing a dress.”
He steps back, pulling out her chair for her and pushing it in when she’s sat. He takes his seat across from her, sliding one menu over to her. “They will make whatever you want, it doesn’t even have to be on the menu.”
Wonwoo turns his head and she follows his gaze, seeing the managers and chefs peeking out from behind a wall. They giggle, hiding when they’re noticed.
“Really?” Her eyes widened, sparkling in the candlelight.
“It’s your day.” He nods.
She purses her lips, blushing before she speaks. “I really want some wine…”
“Red?”
Mira was nursing her third glass of wine, finishing up the asparagus she had with her pasta.
“Did you have a good birthday?” He asked.
She nodded, smiling as she pressed her palm against her cheek, feeling how warm it was under her touch. “It was magical. Thank you for making it so special.”
He grins, downing the little bit of wine he had left.
She jumps at the sound of employees clapping suddenly, making their way over to the table with a cake. She gasps, covering her mouth as they set the cake down in front of her. The candles are already lit as she realizes what the dessert looks like.
Wonwoo softly claps his hands together as him and the employees sing happy birthday to her. She has tears forming in her eyes from how adorable the cake is. It’s her favorite Line Friends character, Cony, and her boyfriend Brown sitting atop the green icing.
Mira giggles, the alcohol in her system making her all the more bubbly.
“Make a wish!”
She looks between the staff and her boyfriend before finally clasping her hands together and shutting her eyes. She had already made plenty of wishes throughout the day, and this one would be no different. When she was ready, she opened her eyes and blew out her candles. Everyone clapped for her before bowing and excusing the two.
“This is the cutest cake ever!” She rotates it carefully, looking at the icing designs around it.
“It suits you perfectly. I was originally just gonna get a Cony one, but I saw the design with her boyfriend and thought you’d love it more.”
She dabs her eyes with her napkin, looking up at him. “Look, it’s us!”
He nods, scratching his neck. “I was thinking that too.”
She takes her phone out to snap a few pictures before setting it down. She reaches across the table, leaving her hand open for his. He quickly grabs it, giving her a squeeze.
“Thank you, Wonwoo. I love you and I love the cake, but if I eat one more bite of anything, I might explode.”
“That’s alright,” He grins. “We can eat it later.”
Her body reacts on its own, blushing and breaking eye contact with him to look at the cloth on the table. She’s aware of her surroundings all at once, her hearing focusing in on the soft, romantic jazz music that’s playing through the restaurant.
“Can I ask you something?” She speaks softly, caressing the back of his hand with her thumb.
“Anything.”
“Do you know how to slow dance?”
Taken aback by her question, his eyes widened and he chuckles to hide his shyness.
“The entire time we’ve been here, I kept thinking how this would be perfect music to slow dance to.” She smiles, letting her head rest on her arm as she gazes up at him.
Wonwoo is still for a beat, until he pushes his chair out to stand, still holding her hand. “It’s your day.”
She hesitates before following his movements, letting him lead the way a few steps from their table to an empty space.
“I might be completely awful at this, but I’ll do my best for you.” He lifts his hand holding hers higher, spinning her into a twirl.
She smiles, facing him once again and hooking her arm under his as he rests his other on her waist. “My first slow dance was in high school, so I’m probably not any better.”
Mira does her best to mimic all the movies she’s seen while growing up, and somehow Wonwoo is perfect at it even with no experience. They follow the music, stepping and swaying back and forth.
She hums, turning her head to rest against his chest. “You wanna know something?”
He squeezed her hand, letting her know he was listening.
“Sometimes, I wish I could give a message to my past self and tell her that there will come a day when she’s surrounded by so much love, that all the hatred she grew up around will wither away little by little.”
He lets the tension that he didn’t know was laying on his shoulders melt away at her words. His hand on her waist slides higher, two full circles around her shoulder blades before he moves it to cup her cheek. Wonwoo puts distance between their faces, analyzing all the features on her face.
The lighting is dim, but he can still see how clearly her eyes shine.
“Mira…” His eyebrows soften, his palm soft against her cheek.
“I just… never thought I’d be deserving of a love like ours in my entire life. I wasn’t sure there were good men like you left in this world. I thought that stuff only existed in fairy tales.”
A tear rolled down her cheek, Wonwoo wiping it away and pressing a kiss to her forehead. “You’ve known a lot of pain in your life, some inflicted by people who are meant to protect you. You’re more than worthy of all the love and kindness the world has to offer, and I want to be a safe haven for you.”
She lets a tiny sob escape her mouth, smiling up at him as her lip wobbles. Mira takes a deep breath, leveling herself out before talking again. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to get all sappy.”
He shakes his head. “I love you, sappiness included. And last time I checked, it’s your party and you can cry if you want to.”
She snorts, throwing her head back in laughter. “I guess what I was trying to say is that I love you, Wonwoo. So much that it almost feels like a crime to be this in love.”
He pulls her closer, arms enveloping her as he rests his chin on top of her head. “I love you too Mira.”
