a holiday gift for @wardenswateringhole !! thank you for playing minecraft with me that one time
Emmet was not a jealous person. Nope. He was proud of who he was! He was a Subway Boss, twin of Ingo, his fellow Subway Boss, son of Arthur, who worked at the Gear Station before he was even born! He was close to his family, loved by his family, and he cherished his family right back.
So why was the fact that one of his depot agents was getting close to his family bothering him so much?
What was there to be jealous of, even? Sure, Arson was around his dad a lot. The two were dating, for Arceus’ sake! So it was normal for them to be spending a lot of time together. But during the weekend he and Ingo were meant to visit Arthur?? How could his dad want to split his time with his own kids with Arson?? Horrible!
Not that Emmet said anything. He could see how happy the two were together, even if their affections were sickeningly cute. Emmet wanted to gag at them sometimes, but Ingo kicked him if he so much as wrinkled his nose around them.
And speaking of Ingo! His own brother was betraying him! He went and befriended the invader of the family!
Emmet nearly screeched when he discovered the pair having lunch together in the twins’ private office. Arson merely waved, friendly enough, while Ingo beckoned him over, something about Arson having a hilarious tale about Whimsy, his Whimsicott, getting into mischief once again.
Emmet, sat stiff as a board, listened, and made sure to one-up the tale with some hilarious tales of his own Pokémon.
He needed to make a plan. He would not be outshone in his own family! Arson was funny, sure, and not a bad person to hang out with (not that Emmet would ever admit he didn’t mind the times the two had rode in the empty train cars together, mindless chatter exchanged between them), but he was overstepping! He was making everyone like him more than Emmet!!
And that would not stand!
So Emmet hatched his ingenious plan. If Arson wanted to be friends with Ingo, Emmet would show him how much better he was as a friend. Emmet would show Arson he was the best person to be friends with! And then he would get most all of Ingo’s attention back! Arthur’s too! It was perfect!
So Emmet made frighteningly intense efforts to befriend Arson further. He practically followed the agent around the Gear Station, chatting with him about everything his mind could think of. He even endured the heavy stench of coconut that playing with Whimsy would induce. He had lunch with Arson, rode the trains with him, demanded battles every day!
To Emmet’s devastation, he found that he only liked Arson more after all his efforts. Emmet found himself genuinely wanting to spend time with the man, and it was too much to bear.
“Hey.” A heavy hand rested on Emmet’s shoulders. He didn’t have to look up from his hands to know it was Arson standing over him. The smell of coconut gave it away almost immediately. “You okay?”
Emmet just grumbled into his palms.
A hum followed, then a gentle thump to the bench space next to him.
“You know, Ingo told me a funny thing earlier.” Arson paused, then nudged Emmet with his shoulder. “He said you were jealous of me.”
Emmet’s head snapped up so fast he felt something pop. “He said what?”
Arson just laughed, shaking his head. “You’re a funny guy, Em. But kinda dumb too.” Before Emmet could breathe fire at him, Arson continued, glancing off at where a small crowd of people were gathering to board the upcoming train. “Ingo likes me, and your dad does too-”
“Too much.” Emmet huffed, not that Arson paid him any mind.
“-but that doesn’t mean I’m replacing you.” Arson nudged their shoulders again, an easy smile on his face. “Come on, as if I could do that. You’re too memorable to be replaced.”
Emmet could only shift in his seat. His lips pressed into a thin line, hardly a smile. He toed the floor, hands flexing, then huffed again. Arson wasn’t the bad guy here, and Emmet probably offended him for thinking poorly of him. So he swallowed his pride and apologized.
“No worries.” Arson said, patting his back. “It’s nice of ya to want to be friends too, despite your raging jealousy.”
“Raging!?” Emmet sputtered. Arson laughed again, taking the halfhearted punches Emmet slammed into his arm. The feel of muscles beneath his knuckles only exasperated his anger and jealousy both. “I will destroy you. I am going to throw you off the Gear Station roof.”
He wouldn’t. As much as he wanted to, he knew he would miss Arson too much. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t get his punches in, even if it meant getting a lecture from Ingo later.
