Being shadar-kai means Mournful Echo has served the Raven Queen for countless life cycles, without question. That is, until they and their ally Lover's Whisper followed the ravens to the Shadow-Cursed Lands, in search of tragedy to collect. The curse drove them mad, and once separated, Mournful Echo was captured by the cultists and subsequently wound up on an illithid ship, with a tadpole in their brain.

However, perhaps this is a blessing in disguise, because it means for the first time in longer than memory allows, Echo is experiencing emotions besides despair. Maybe they will even learn what it feels like to truly live again?
