Well, this week I think it's Empress who I'm thinking about most. She's an antagonistic mentor figure to my character Steph in a Masks game I'm a player in, but I'm expecting to play as her in a prequel oneshot in the same setting tomorrow, so her characterisation and motivations are quite fresh in my head atm.

Her backstory is that she managed to escape a life of exploitation and degradation when she unexpectedly came into a particularly destructive set of superpowers as a teenager. Since then she's become a sort of Punisher-type antihero lethally terrorising organised crime groups for the sake of fuelling her own feelings of righteous indignation at people the law tacitly deems acceptable targets for it. 30 years later and her life hasn't really changed, except that there's nobody else still in it who she hasn't long-since burned her bridges with one way or another. Empress considers it very important to maintain an appearance of dignity and threat to others—the kind she was always denied when she was younger—which is somewhat at odds with what a petty and vindictive loser she is beneath the mask.
