The Illusion of Truth is a Fallout fanfic featuring both my Lone Wanderer Malcolm Gray and my Sole Survivor Nora C Cartwright.
Original post:
I guess I can share my dork (ref sheets made by the wonderful @x-enocyon):
Malcolm Gray is my Lone Wanderer, angry with James for abandoning him in the vault, frustrated with the Brotherhood's lack of action regarding many wasteland issues, and eventually finding himself as Colonel Autumn's protégé.
For ten years Malcolm finds himself based out of the Whitesprings, training to become a military leader in the Enclave, participating in cybernetics research, conducting solo scouting operations for future Enclave occupation, and seeking out vaults with high likelihoods of dwellers to recruit into the Enclave.
With the successful capture and occupation of the Commonwealth in 2288, the now General Autumn promotes Malcolm to the rank of colonel, giving him authority over the region. The Enclave's presence in the Commonwealth does not go uncontested, leading to further conflict within the region and Malcolm himself.
Malcolm is highly knowledgeable in the medical field thanks to James's efforts in Vault 101, branching into cybernetics after seeing the current and developing technologies available to the Enclave, primarily focusing on helping injured soldiers regain use of lost limbs. He also is knowledgeable in computers and other technical equipment, a proficient vertibird pilot, and is skilled in under cover operations.
After being seemingly abandoned, Malcolm is desperate for approval and acceptance from those he respects and cares for, sometimes blinding him from right and wrong. He finds it difficult making personal connections given his position as Autumn's successor and spent a lot of time believing they would hold him back as he pursued his Enclave career.
After finding people who show him the problems with the Enclave, Malcolm is able to understand how the Enclave has caused considerable damage to the country they have claimed to protect over the years and becomes one of the people spearheading efforts to rebuild the country in ways that everyone can agree on.
Malcolm is a major character in my fic and he gets to be the favourite of my OCs.
That fic I keep talking about that I'm writing? It's slowly going up when I feel like it's ready. (You will have to login to AO3 to see it because bots and AI scraping.)
Part I: Voices of Authority follows Malcolm Gray as he leaves Vault 101 and slowly becomes a highly skilled and proficient leader within the Enclave under Colonel Autumn.
There are currently two chapters:
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
Part II: And All My Dreams, Torn Asunder will bring Nora C Cartwright into the story.
Part I: Voices of Authority
Malcolm Gray of Vault 101 finds himself chasing after his father across the Capital Wasteland in search of answers: why would James leave the vault? Why did Project Purity fail, and who really wants it to succeed?
Project Purity becomes the centre of conflict in the Capital Wasteland after the Enclave decides to become more than just a voice on the radio. With the Brotherhood of Steel's attention now on the Enclave, Malcolm is tasked with trying to finish his father's research in order to start the purifier. As Malcolm learns more about the two Capital Wasteland factions about to go to war, Malcolm decides to take his destiny into his own hands.

I don't know how often it will update, or if I will remember to update tumblr when I do post. I'm taking a very different approach to fic writing (and subsequent sharing) than previously to take care of my mental health.
I have two updates regarding The Illusion of Truth:
First, in the last few weeks or so, when I've gone to visit AO3 there has been a Cloudflare page popping up to see if I'm human. Honestly I have no problem with this as historically I have had issues with my (now offline) fics getting 60 kudos after only three visits which was highly suspicious - given the timing, my theory is that some of my fics (and many others written by other authors) were being scraped to train LLMs. To try making it more difficult for these thieves to take our work, we've been locking our fics to for users only. I have no proof that any of my work was fed into the word vomit machines, just an educated guess given the timing of developments around "AI". I'm assuming more protections have been put in place to make scraping more difficult.
With Cloudflare now on AO3, I'm willing to open up this fic to all readers. It was other authors here who inspired me to begin writing and sharing, other people who pour time and effort into their passions because the journey of creating is a rewarding experience.
If you've seen me before, thanks for hanging out. If you're new here, welcome and enjoy the first part of the fic (and hopefully what's to come). You can start reading here:
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Secondly, Learning Curve - 02 has now been posted where we continue to follow Mal as he continues on in the Enclave's ranks.

Part II: Learning Curve
Far away from the Capital Wasteland, Malcolm begins a new journey in the heart of the Enclave. With opportunities far beyond what Malcolm would have ever had back in Vault 101, he is hopeful he can find his purpose on the surface world he now calls home. As Malcolm advances his Enclave career, he begins to explore both his strengths and travels to regions beyond the Enclave's slowly growing influence.
When MODUS detects a nuclear detonation near the western coast, General Autumn brings Malcolm to investigate the mysterious event that in theory should have not been possible. With the Enclave regaining control of the country's nuclear arsenal, who else knew any launch codes after all this time?
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
Malcolm swallowed and looked away. Where would he go? Any territory the Brotherhood touched would be risky as they probably saw him as the enemy now. He had been run out of Vault 101, and he had the impression that he wouldn’t be welcome back based on Amata’s message with no way to return it without know what frequency was being used – that was probably given out on a need-to-know basis. His Pip-Boy could supposedly be configured to listen for those frequencies, but at this point he doubted he could remain close enough to pick up any future signals from Vault 101.
This is the last chapter of Voice of Authority, in which Malcolm decides where he will go after the events at Project Purity.
Learning Curve is on its way as Part II of this fic.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
Malcolm returns to Project Purity on the heels of Liberty Prime and the Brotherhood of Steel, and makes decisions that will forever shape the wasteland.
“Here is Mister Gray now,” the voice seemed to come from the direction of the central computer, but no one seemed to be standing beside Autumn. “My understanding is that you were helping your father bring purified water to the Capital Wasteland. This is an endeavour that the Enclave would like to see become a reality, as every American has a right to fresh, clean water.”
Autumn glanced over his shoulder briefly before returning his attention to scrolling text on a monitor in front of him. He seemed tense, along with many other officers within the Command Centre. Malcolm felt like he was missing something in the room but didn’t want to appear too obvious in his scanning of his surroundings. “I didn’t get much opportunity to work at Project Purity, Mister President. I don’t know if I can be of much help.”
