A woman inspected her closely then let her through the narrow door.
It was quiet in here. A heavy quiet, almost to the point of suffocating. She ignored it and shoved open a door. Inside a tall thin man looked up from a stack of paper, eyes raised over his wire rimmed glasses. “To what do I owe the pleasure, Maya?”
“So, you’ve decided what to call me now Mason?”
“It was getting quite tiring simply calling you bastard, and your former title has such a pathetic ring to it.”
“I was called the Deathless,” she yawned and dropped into the armchair opposite him, “I wouldn’t quite call that pathetic.”
“Anyway, I haven’t heard from you in some time. Last I heard was 6 years ago, when it burned. What now?”
Maya started to play with the knife in her hand, balancing and flipping it back and forth. Finally, she asked bluntly, “are they back?”
“Who?”
“You know damned well who.” The lazy words formed a sharp edge hanging in the air.
Mason nodded, and set his stack aside. “They have not been seen in years. The Beaters is gone.”
“And Joseph?”
“You killed him, you’d know better than I.”
“I killed him.” Maya nodded to herself. “I killed his people. And you,” she suddenly leaned forward, eyes hard, “you said there was nothing left.”
“I said that all the people at the warehouse perished that night. I did not say there was nothing left.”
“You did; when I came and asked, you said they were gone.”
“Gone, not dead.”
Maya’s eyes narrowed. She stared at him in cold silence for a moment, before asking, “are you sure you’ve heard nothing?”
“Why? Should I have?” he returned levelly, face unreadable.
“Keep watching.” With that statement, she rose and stalked out the door, making sure her nails scratched a squeal across the ageing glass outside.
