Florians are the first species I ever made for my planet years ago. This is the first drawing I did of one from 2022!
Praelucente is made up of 70% ocean, and its hives are located at the bottom of the sea, under thick domes. Artificial lighting illuminates them on a Terran day-night cycle, which only took two generations for them to adjust to after contact with the Imperium. There is no visibility of the ocean or sky, as horrors beyond comprehension lurk in Praelucente's deep waters. Occasionally, an eldritch being teleports through the thick void shielding and bypasses kilometers of archaeotech barriers to assault the city. Astartes are stationed permanently in the Hives to help combat this, mostly from the Cerulean Gooner Chapter. from 'lagoon', not porn!
Most Hivers subsist on corpse starch in the manufactories, with the introduced species of rats and roaches being a rare delicacy. There's a black market that breeds gourmet rats alongside the usual contraband of stimms, poisons, stolen goods, children with exceptional fine motor skills...
HIVER BIOLOGY
The Hivers are physically and spiritually built different from surface-dwellers. The radiation from the twin suns cant get through their domes and thus does not influence them. Every hive dome is a closed ecosystem, and radiation is only recieved in negligible doses via passive transference of machinery, imports, water purification and so on. As a result, hiveborn Iridiates are much more resistant to the Primarch's aura due to their brains not being pre-cooked throughout their lives. They lack the innate radiation resistance of surface-dwellers and their highly adapted DNA.
They find comfort in dark places, repetitive sounds and hard, stable surfaces. They're prone to overstimulation from bright colours, as almost everything in the Hives is monochrome, brutalist infrastructure of rockcrete and steel. Few Hivers can last more than a couple of minutes on the surface without going mad, and this is the first test for hiveborn aspirants who wish to become Astartes.
They tend to have more dense musculature and stockier frames. Their psychic shields are innately much stronger than their noble born brethren, which leads to communication difficulties in such a telepathy-heavy Legion. They're typically seen as standoffish or untrustworthy, which doesn't play nice with their geneseed's predisposition to neuroticism and rejection sensitivity.
Their facial features are less extreme, their forms more corporeal and grounded. They haven't bred for generations to look like the nobility's beauty standards and find the nobility frightening and monstrous to look at. Hiveborn Astartes get over this real quick with the 'know no fear' part of their indoctrination, though the culture barrier often pains them for their entire life.
Hiveborn Astartes are usually marginalized thanks to the huge class divide of Praelucente. Sometimes they're fetishized for being 'untamed' - there are people in the Legion who are like mmmm rough tough hiver, ooo so separate from us in the deep seaaaa. They are SO built different and it's the source of much division as well as interest.
The divide between hiveborn and nobility is so notable that bonding is pushed by the Legion's Chaplains. How this turns out is highly dependent on the individuals involved. The practise has fallen out of favour after Lysander killed the last Chaplain who tried to play nicey-nice diversity slice.
CULTURE
Hivers tattoo their family unit's sigil on the forehead when they come of age (12), wearing a necklace or bracelet in childhood that shows what urban tribe they belong to. They use the term 'as' (pron. 'ass') to call their families, it's shorthand for 'unitas' (unit). It's like having everyone in your apartment building be your brothers and sisters. The Gothic translation is 'block-kin', or 'block brothers/sisters' for sex-segregated units.
They have something called “butcher's tattoos” inked into their skin as they go through life. These are words, abbreviations and names - of their families, the part of the manufactorum they worked in, and tattoos that mark if they had internal metal implants so people knew which parts not to grind into corpse starch. These tattoos help in identifying bodies for their loved ones, as death is commonplace in the crowded factories and disease ridden streets. A few cults of Nurgle may be proliferating in the stickiest alleyways...
Sadly, many of these tattoos fade during the Astartes creation process, as the genhanced body regenerates and eventually bleaches through any pigment in the skin. This is a major part of why hiveborn Iridiates feel a disconnect in identity far greater than those of their noble brothers. If the culture shock wasn't enough, they're now 'purified' (as the Chaplains reassure them) of their past lives, born anew to serve the Emperor... and then their whole Legion gives no fucks about any of that and is constantly gooning to the Primarch. YEOWCH! The third eye replacing the unitas forehead sigil is also a point of identity erasure.
Hivers can also identify other clans based on their body shape and movements. Top-heavy people with steady hands, those who stand hunched with feet squarely blocked apart, long-fingered twitchy folk with an eye for detail that can't stand looking at the broad basicness of the world... Yep, someone can tell where you work and what sector you come from just by eyeballing your figure. They don't really look at each other's faces unless initiating conversation.
Hivers occasionally ring their eyes with charcoal when in mourning, mimicking physical signs of exhaustion that most supervisors catch as a sign to give someone a break.
AND THATS ALL THE LORE FOR NOW!
ty heaps to @nurglescauldron and @jaghatai-khock for inspiring me!!

(This one Cambrian has clothing a tad too modern, I realized, I'll draw another in the future with more accurate clothing)
Alien species for my planet Necoria, the Nauchtian! There's more coming, and all species are open species, so feel free to make an oc of your own of the species you like!

Nauchtians have one subspecies that lives in the desert vs the forest, the typical nauchtian lives in!
