As darkness falls in the sleepy village, I quietly leave home, the chill in the air causes me to pull my cloak tighter around me. Watching my back, I head to the stables to meet with Hild. She already has the horses saddled and ready. I throw a fur over the back of the horse I’m taking before softly petting the brown mare’s neck.
“How long will it take us to reach Winchester?” I ask Hild. I’ve never been that far south before, so this is all unfamiliar territory. We lead the horses out of the stable quietly and to the gate before mounting them, being cautious not to arouse suspicion.
As I mount the horse, I pray to the Gods that my side is able to withstand the journey. The wound has healed, but I still experience some pain from it, especially when I over do it. I don’t want to slow us down from reaching our destination, we have to get there before the men leave for Mercia.
Hild fixes a couple of small packs to her saddle before pulling a sword out from a bedroll and tying it to her belt.
"If we ride hard, we could be there in a couple of nights*, but I don't want you pushing yourself if you're still having any pain."
Hild works quickly and with practiced ease, leaves the stables with Revna, then mounts her horse. They ride quickly for a while, Hild glancing at Revna, trying to assess her for outward signs of pain; after putting enough distance between them and Coccham that Hild is comfortable with slowing some, she looks at her.
"How are you feeling so far?" If they can keep up the previous pace, and given the long hours of darkness, they would make Winchester in two nights, though she didn't want to overly tax Revna.
*length of travel time is based on a ridiculously generous estimate of 30 miles per day on horseback. It likely would have taken a minimum of three days for two people traveling light.
