Wow it’s been a bit since I last actually drew something....oops. And it’s been even longer since @finweanladiesweek, which this piece was originally for...but hey! It’s done now!

This is for Day 6: Original Characteres! Meet Rilya, the eighth child and only daughter of Fëanor and Nerdanel. Her father name is Rilyárë, meaning “glittering dawn,” and her mother name is Rátasilmë, meaning “surpassing shining white light”...aka the Silmarils. Rilya was born after the Second Music and her parents’ reconciliation; she has Nerdanel’s eyes and Míriel’s hair. I came up with her about two years ago while writing Dawn, you can read a bit more about her there :)

I think if I made a Fëanorian daughter OC now, I’d write her differently, and give her a -míriel name from her father, but I still love her <3

what do you think it would be like if feanor had a daughter too?

hmmm, so I wrote a fic where he and Nerdanel had a daughter post-canon, so that is one take on it...but if we’re talking pre-canon, around the same time as his other kids, I don’t think it would’ve changed much? despite the names I gave the OC in that fic (which I’d probably do differently if I wrote it now!), I’m firmly of the belief that Feanor would give his daughter a -finwe name, too, OR a -miriel name which is honestly even more of a power move. I do think he and Nerdanel wanted a daughter - though of course they love their sons - but it just never happened. or they thought it did, but their child was actually trans (and imo Feanor is a good dad and would be very supportive of any of his kids being queer even if there’s taboos around it; his issue with Russingon would be the fact that Fingon is Nolo’s kid, not that he’s a dude).

but if they had a daughter in addition to their sons, I’m imagining she would probably be the youngest or thereabouts, and everyone would be extremely protective of her. I mean, mad scientist father and seven older brothers?? the intimidation would be off the charts! but since this is Feanor we’re talking about I’m thinking she’d inherit his fiery spirit and recklessness, tempered somewhat by Nerdanel’s wisdom, but very much stubborn and independent. she’d be a master at whatever craft she put her mind to. depending on when she was born and which parent she was closer to, I’m not sure if she would’ve sworn the oath... maybe? I don’t like picturing Feanor as sexist, though there’s evidence he could be, so I don’t think he’d be against her swearing the oath because she’s a girl...but maybe because she’s youngest? though that didn’t stop him with Ambarussa, even when Nerdanel begged.

or maybe this daughter is conceived in Feanor and Nerdanel’s last meeting, and not born until after Feanor and his sons have already left. that would be an entirely different environment...

Dawn Back to Middle-earth Month 2/24/19 | @feanorianweek Day 7 “Pardon’s the word to all.” [Shakespeare Quotes] | Marriage, Reunion, Creation, Healing [Nerdanel & Fëanor]

The world is renewed, the marring reconciled, the pains of all ages washed away. Arda Reforged is a paradise of love and magic, and all is at last as it should be.

And yet, Nerdanel's house is empty.

She does not begrudge her sons for forging lives of their own. They had all been pardoned of their misdeeds and allowed a second life, for which she was grateful. They were not strangers to her home, but it was not theirs any longer. It had not been since they first left for Middle-earth long ago.

Nerdanel had friends and family, but she lived alone. She had long since adapted to her solitude; she had endured it for ages. It had given her the space she needed to heal and recover from the pain of losing her sons and her husband. She was glad of that time, but now...

The Great Battle was over. Arda was whole. Around her, people thrive, and she is glad of that. But her marriage-bond still burns within her, and she misses Fëanáro.
