I've been walking a tightrope between a tone of "truly horrifying" and "comically absurd" with a short story that I feel like I've been tinkering it for ages. Anyway, here's a few excerpts from said story:

“You’re under arrest,” the older Palmer began. As he started to recount his Miranda rights, September clung to the bars with both hands, his eyes wide with confusion. “On what charges?!” Palmer held up a hand and began counting them off with relish. “Illegal phone tapping, aiding in a prison escape, falsifying documents, tax evasion, racketeering, drunk and disorderly conduct, and credible suspicions of aiding in and committing several homicides.” The older Palmer’s grin widened into a ghoulish rictus. “You’ve done a good job of avoiding us until now, Mr…you go by Knight now, right?” September blinked several times, shaking his head as he searched his memory. “Phone tapping?” “That’s the only one you want to dispute?” Mariela scoffed.

The dead eyed HR officer looked down at his clipboard to rattle off a list of rules. His name was ROGER, spelled out neatly in broad strokes on his nametag. His skin was the pale gray of the many representatives in other businesses that operated in Hollow Grove. The HR department kept tabs on who was where and made sure each employee and other dependent parties adhered to that business’ protocols. “As stated before, your bail has been set and your trial date has been scheduled,” he droned on. “Per prison procedure, you each will be given one phone call.” He looked up, the glint in his gray eyes sharp and intense. “Emphasis on ONE.” ROGER paused before his eyes went back to his clipboard. “Until that point, you will be waiting in one of our holding cells. Any questions?” Emery opened his mouth to say something, but ROGER slammed his clipboard down. “Very good.”
