NaNo Day 3

"And so he's just... gone?"

Zig knew the faery was gone because he was standing right outside his house. But somehow, he wanted to hear his brother say it.

"Yeah. I didn't even turn around-- just pulled my phone out to text you, and when I looked up, poof."

Poof, huh. He didn't like the sound of that.

"It's not that different from when you used to step through doors to who knows where," Tripp continued. "This guy just didn't need a door."

"I don't love that, bro. I wish..."

Zig didn't know what he wished. But he did know better than to run around saying "I wish." You never know who was listening.

"Will you be okay over there with that maze up for a bit?"

"Yeah, I guess. Mama's still in there, far as I know, but she doesn't leave much now days."

"Fuck."

Zig hadn't considered how the maze might affect Meliki and her people.

"Get a hold of her girls at The Early Bird, make sure everyone is okay. Call me back if they're not. Otherwise, I'm going to allow our guest to introduce himself."

"You didn't even let the guy tell you his name?"

"He hadn't offered."

Zig was tempted to hang up, to do that cool guys never say goodbye thing from TV. But he wasn't a cool guy; he was a dad. And a worried brother.

"Call me back later anyways, just to chat. Love you."

"Love you too, dork."

NaNo day 5

“My kids are in trouble and I can’t even See them!”

This was it. The tightness that had been bubbling up in his chest all day was finally coming out. Something about the darkness undid him, eased the careful pressure that held him up all day. It was as if at night, when all the eyes were off him, and he could be his truest self, there was nothing left to be.

The pacing he had been trying to start gave way with an abrupt drop to the bed. Puppet strings cut he just lay there, out of-- well, out of everything.

“What good are stupid magic powers if all they do is cause trouble?”

It was muttered, half-hearted and into the press of the blankets beneath his cheek. Even if he’d run out of steam, he’d not run out of worry. Anxiety still clawed at the hollow insides of him, searching the remains for any last scraps to eat. It combed through him relentlessly, like fingers raked through his hair--

No, that one was his wife. His darling, wonderful wife, come down to the foot of the bed beside him, to wrap her warm body around his and chase the nightmares through the blue fields of his dyed hair. He murmured an almost laughed “Get ‘em” and snuggled close.

After several heartbeats of warming himself by her fire, enough energy returned to voice worries again.

“I’d ask how you can be so calm, but I’ve met your mother.”

The young man on his doorstep radiated magic, so much so that Zig could hardly see him for it, even with his Sight mostly tamped down. I'm sorry this is so late! Moving has really taken its toll on me!

Zig fidgeted, adjusting his bodice for the millionth time. His brother laughed and readjusted it for him, batting Zig's hands away as they fluttered uselessly at the waist of his gown.

"Its not too late for me to switch to the pants..."

"No, not," Tripp agreed, straightening one of the corest's loops. "Do you want to?"

"I--"

The words died half formed on his lips, thoughts whirling too fast to follow. His nails made soft shooshing sounds against the satin of his full skirts.

"Its your wedding day," Tripp said calmly, crouching to check the ties at the hem of Zig's dress. "You can wear pants any day of the week. How often do you get to drag around a beaded train?"

Zig looked over his shoulder, the seed pearls winking and laughing in the light.

"True..."

"And besides," Tripp continued, "Jules would never forgive you if you didnt show her up. Then shed be the one everyone coos over."

"True."

Zig felt the lip stain stick as his smile spread. Iced berry pink. The perfect compliment to his lightning blue eyes.

Tripp stood, pulling his own iced berry cummerbund back into place.

"You look beautiful, bro. Enjoy it."

Zig blinked rapidly, beaming down at his brother. He stepped down off the step stool and reached for a kleenex.

"I swear to God, if you make my mascara run I'm never going to forgive you."

Are you named after someone?

Ziggy Stardust himself, baby! (Author’s note: Zig and Tripp woke up in the woods one day with almost no memories. Zig named Tripp after his younger brother’s own clumsiness, and Tripp named Zig after the ragged tear in his left pupil. It was only after discovering Labyrinth and the greatness that is Bowie that Zig decided to make his full name David Zigbert Jones.)

When was the last time you cried?

Zig cries all the time. “Last time” is hard to pin down for a fictional character :/

Do you have kids?

Zig will have three darling children, Alexander James (Ajay), Amarilys May (Amay) and Thomas—oh fuck! I forgot Thomas’s middle name!!! shit shit shit must consult girlfriend!!!!

Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Only when I want to speak to my teenagers in their native tongue. :P (only all the time, Zig, be honest)

What is the first thing you notice about people?

Their ink. ;)

What’s your eye colour?

Pale blue. Not sure what it was Before (Author’s Note: Remember said incident in the woods? His pupil and the boys’ changed eye colors are the result of staring directly into the goddess-who-fancies-herself-the-sun)

Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy Endings—though scary movies can be great for cuddling!

Any special talents?

I’m left-handed, does that count? (Zig. Ziggy. YOU ARE LITERALLY MAGIC.)

Where were you born?

California, I think. It’s where I woke up.

What are your hobbies?

I play guitar, paint, cook. I used to try to bake, but I gave that up after meeting Jules and her infinitely superior baking skills. Oh, and I read a lot! Para normal romances are my fav!

Do you have any pets?

We had Duke, a white Great Dane, since Cali, not long after Tripp and I fell in with Clarissa’s gang. He stayed with us until a little after I moved out of Eight-Leggs, and then Jules and I found Freecloud, a pathetic looking fluffball who grew into a Burmese Mountain Dog (that still insists on sitting on my lap). Then Thomas will wind up with a Yorkie he gets from our neighbors, but I think that’s looking a little far down the road?

How tall are you?

6’1”, because the author refuses to allow anyone to be taller than her (not true, Zig, lots of characters are taller than me. Just not you)

What sports do you play/ have played?

Clarissa tried to organize a basketball team once, that was… fun? And I play RockBand, does that count?

Favourite subject at school?

Calling it “school” is stretching thing a bit. Mostly we hung out and played into Princess Clarissa’s fantasies of being a normal human girl *eye roll*

Thanks for the tag @converginglives Zig is on my mind since filling out his questionnaire for @carrotgirl-weeb, so why don’t we pester him today?

1. Hi Zig! How are you doing today?

3. How do you feel about your name? Your surname?

Seeing as I picked both, pretty darn good. (Btw, Zig took his wife’s surname when they got married. So he is now David Zigbert Benedict. Just FYI)

4. Is there anything you’d like to thank your author for?

Making me awesome? B)

5. You can only eat three foods for the rest of your life, what are they?

Tacos, coffee, aaaaand…. my wife’s baking. C’mon, you gotta give me that one. Pleeeeease :)

6. Have you ever done or said anything that surprised your author?

(All these freakin emojis sure are suprisingly me let me just say) *shrugs* I dunno. I try not to pay too much attention to her. I’m a method actor. B) (you’re a complete dork is what you are)

7. You have limitless funds, what kind of party are you going to have?

A 17 course fancy dress up dinner, followed by mini golf and/or laser tag.

8. Tell us a quick story about something that’s happened to you that not even your author knows about… yet.

I mean, I’ve hinted that I went through some pretty gnarly stuff back West. And some not so stellar stuff when I first got here… A lot of it I’m not proud of. A lot of it, Chris would never forgive me for. A lot of it should have by rights killed me.

Let’s just say I found out real quick what the local master vamp does and doesn’t prefer in a snack. How’s that?

9. Do you have a favorite hero?

Is it too corny to say my little brother? He’s seriously got his shit together man.

10. What do you plan to do after this?

PTA meeting? Sounds about right.

Zig: Flashbacks

A few years back, I tried to get Zig to tell me a little more about his time with Clarissa and Hollywood vampires. I never got very far, but still hope to get back to it one day.

Zig knew he would never overcome this. Years and years later, he would always feel the pull of it in his blood, always feels his heart race, feel the pumping of adrenaline in his veins. Whispers in the back of his mind told him this would always be who he was, who was meant to be, and why did he fight it? With a shudder and a sigh he closed the book and closed his eyes, leaning up against the headboard.

It had been a mistake to pick up a supernatural romance. He knew it would be, but it had gotten so many good reviews, unlike so much of the currently popular teenage vampire drivel. He'd had to laugh, imagining how Clarissa would have taken to Edward Cullen, or [insert another damned vampire here]. Probably eaten them alive. But that thought came with flashes of fangs and flesh and Zig dug his nails into his palms, just trying to quietly ride the high out.

That was the worst part. Not the nightmares, not the memories, but the physical flashbacks. Brought on by gods only knew what, from time to time Zig would find himself deep in the throes of a bite-induced blood high. His body would spontaneously dump all of it's fight or flight into him at once, coupled with a mind-numbing euphoria that left his heart racing but his limbs unwilling to move. It would pass in a matter of minutes, but the lazy bliss would remain. For hours, he want nothing more than to lay there, simply basking, while his body tried to replenish it's strength. Only, no blood had been taken, there was nothing to restore. But he'd still have flashbacks all the same. If he'd get up, move around despite the languor, he found that it wore off more quickly, but in the first few minutes, it was impossible to do anything. Zig just laid there and stared at the ceiling, wondering if he would ever get over this, or if he'd have flashbacks for the rest of his life.
