ART CLASS TIME !!!! let me show you all how i draw in a digital collage style, featuring mark, my ponysona :)

lets begin!

what i do first is basically what everyone does, i start off with a sketch!

notably here i'm trying to rough out the shapes i'll use. i also try to think about what order the layers will be going in once i fill in my shapes!

from there, my next step is colorblocking, where i use a series of semitransparent layers in high contrast colors to put my shapes on the canvas and figure out the order of layers.

i didnt actually save an image of the colorblocking step, but you can see it in the speedpaint below.

after that, i use a reference and pick some colors similar to the ones present, but i shift the hue and brightness around to make sure each shape has contrast.

most of the time i'll make shapes in front lighter and shapes in back darker to denote shading, but not always. it's fun to mix and match!

the next part is my favorite, adding textures! i use a combination of various textured pngs i've found on pinterest and google, along with a few procreate brushes i think are cute. experiment and see what you like!

this step can be finicky because it's hard to keep the hues similar while using different overlays, but if you experiment with layer blending modes and multiple layers, it may help you achieve a result more similar to the colors you chose initially.

i like to experiment with what textures and brushes i use to make sure each element still stands out, and that one element doesn't overpower the whole piece.

for example, if i chose a busier texture for the darkest part of mark's mane, you'd struggle to make out the rest of the details, like his lighter streaks and the separation of his bangs from the back of his mane.

finally, i follow these steps for the shading:

duplicate each layer

recolor the new layers to a dark blueish-purple

use a very minor gaussian blur filter on them (1-3% on procreate)

shift all of the shading layers a little down and to the side

turn them into multiply layers and set opacity to 80-90%

it sounds like a lot.. but it's more tedious than anything lol...... (it also makes procreate lag YAAAAY LOL)

you can also experiment with the color of your shading layers, how you position them, etc.

and tada! you have a collage style drawing of your oc, fave, f/o, etc. :3

(My) Favorite Shots - part 2

towards the end of making this story, I thought to myself, "damn, there's a lot of great shots I took." I decided to make a series of posts highlighting them, 2 per post. (Or at least I'll try.) There's some things I hope you notice as they go along. If you choose to read (or look through it), there’s CWs abound; there’s a particular sequence later that has 6-7 iirc (maybe I’m miscounting) but they’re all listed at the top of the post. I’ll list them here as well.

I think I got the point across in that Daniel is a big dude. Vin was at the mercy of physics. I'll point out that Vin may or may not be in The Yamcha pose. It's really adjacent but I laughed after the fact.

Shout out to the people who made vein cc so I could do this. Like you know it's bad when a) you can see them and b) they are dark like that. I'm not saying that it's killing him (it... well.) but he's not having a good time.

I made the decision for Vin's eyes to be blank bc it looked way cooler. This is Wrath. I'll be on the record that yknow, may have grabbed some inspo from Asura from Asura's Wrath (really great game btw).

bit of fun fact -- because I wanted to be detailed and shit like that, I found a program (after much google fu) that simulated actual vital signs; it involved me using another laptop and also me grabbing the screens. You can look at it and go 'hmm, seems kind of bad!' This will come into play later on.

a close up of the veins. good lord he is vascular. but that's why nurses like him; his is very easy to find.

At some point, John got up and started pacing and I don't exactly blame him; that was intense.

This looks like a shot in an anime opening.

This particular shot is kind of a subtle thing for what's to come and John's getting his mine right.

The slight running thing between Vin and John is that they're (or rather Vin) closed off with body language.

Vin forcing open the lab doors. "What's up, fuckers." Probably.

John sees the carnage for the first time...

...and Vin is like "yeah, that Thursday night got out of hand."

He's not liking this.

The blood framing the distance between them? chef's kiss. mwah.

Vin being framed like this... it reminds me of something but I love how this game out.

Using the one-way mirror for reflecting? Mwah, another chef's kiss. I also didn't mean to have opposite colors for Daniel and Charles, lol.

I named John's file 'go king give us nothing.blend.' This is also the part where Charles talks about John and he does lowkey Nasty Man things like touch John's hair while he is tubed up; weirds Daniel out as it should but did not do shit about it. This is a theme that will come back later.

Daniel accuses of Charles being a failure and Charles snaps. This shot really encapsulates who he is and I intended this to be a jumpscare (bc it was). but the expression, his piercing red eyes? creepy shit.

One squad (plus assigned field medic) worth of troopers... Sort of turned into a lighting practice. I drew one bald base and copy pasted it 9 times... very easy for drawing identical men in the same pose with different hairstyles.
