Cecil jumps, promptly whirling around from looking out over the side of the ship, heart racing from being pulled so suddenly from the realms of his own thought.
Jess looks amused, to say the least, by his reaction -- and even though he’s willing his heart to stop pounding, he’s glad that she’s smiling again; even though she still looks more tired than he’s ever seen her before.
“I- Today’s just been... I’ve been thinking about everything.” The sight of Theodor, so weakened, so vulnerable; Jess clinging to him like a lifeline. It feels like the stench of blood is still on his clothes -- the metallic scent never quite leaving him, even hours after. Theodor had seemed so... so immortal; untouchable. “Is he alright?”
“As well as to be expected,” Jess says, with a shrug. “He’s talking and being annoying as usual; so it really can’t be that bad.” She smiles at that; soft and fond, and Cecil finds himself returning it naturally, without even thinking. Jess moves over to him, leaning up against the rail of the ship next to him. “I wanted to thank you, though.”
“Thank me?”
“You found him.” Jess turns herself, so she’s facing out to look over the waves. “You brought him back; he may have died without you. Thanks means little, but, know that this debt won’t be forgotten.”
“I- there’s no need to thank me,” He reassures, trying for a nonchalant shrug of his own. “And there’s no debt. I did what he would have done for me. Really-”
“Ah, that’s a shame,” Jess says, with a hum -- and there’s a hint of playfulness creeping into her tone. “Theodor did have a few suggestions for rewards.” She chuckles, warmly, “Though, then again; some of them wouldn’t be entirely appropriate to repeat.”
Cecil feels the heat rising to his cheeks immediately at that -- flushing pink, and he shifts awkwardly, trying to swallow back the flustered nervousness that sparks at that, heart fluttering in his chest.
Jess laughs again at that, but it’s fond rather than anything mocking, and she’s turning back to face him, still leaning lazily against the side of the ship.
“You turn such a pretty shade of pink, Cariño.” She reaches out, tenderly, cupping her palm against his cheek -- which only serves to make matters worse, heat flooding his face. “So warm- you unravel quick, don’t you? Are you this cute for everybody or am I just special?”
“I- well- I- um-” He fumbles over his words, floundering for something to say; but his tongue seems unable to co-operate enough to even form a coherent sentence. Jess is looking at him, directly, her hand still against him and God she’s so warm -- but not in a bad way, in a comforting way. And her smile, has it always been that bright? And how hasn’t he noticed the flecks of hazel in her eyes before? Have they always been there?
She shakes her head, tossing back a few stray curls from her face before pulling her hand away, grin still fixed on her expression.
“I’m only teasing, Cecil.” She reassures, but it does little to slow his heartbeat any -- which is still pounding itself against his chest. “You’re adorable. I see why Theodor likes you, now.”
“I... like him too.” He replies, straightening up a little, trying to recover from the brief moment.
Jess turns her head back to look at him, raising a brow, inquisitively. “You do?”
“Yes... I... I think, actually, despite how I initially perceived him; he would be a good friend.”
Jess snorts -- amused, not derisive, turning back away from him. And he wonders exactly what about what he said was so funny.
“Ah, yes, friends.” She exhales, gently, content. “I’m sure he would be happy to hear that, truly.” Jess moves, pushing herself to stand back up straight, offering her hand. “I’m going to be watching over him for the night; if you can’t sleep, come talk to me for a while; you can even sleep in there if you wish.”
“I- that cabin’s yours- I couldn’t intrude-”
“Is it an intrusion if I ask you to accompany me? Would it make it easier for you if I made it an order?”
Cecil only pauses to contemplate for a while longer, before nodding, moving to take her hand, and she tugs him closer so quickly that he stumbles as they start walking.
“Come on, we should get back before he wakes up and starts wandering trying to find us. I’m not jumping in after him if he falls overboard.”
