I've been working on updating Tar for a few days now and I finally finished her! I also added Acácia's dress to that picture of her I did a while ago and wanted to post them together so here they are - Taraya Sparkflare the gob-troll prosthetic engineer, and Acácia Feverlock the mechanized nurse 💖💖
Plus a side-by-side for height comparison purposes <333
Fact of the day: Both Mina's and Gheist's prosthestics were designed and built by Taraya!
Mina's leg was amputaded above the knee. The casing of her prosthetic is sturdy, made specifically to handle living in the desert - Mina's moved out of Tanaris by now but her leg's still holding strong and she has no need or want to replace it!
Gheist's arm was amputaded at the shoulder. The casing is lighter to make for easier movement, which comes at the cost of it being more frail, but Doctor Taraya's a professional and she can fix just about any damage done to her prosthetics!
Both of them have a little bit of soft padding where they connect to make wearing them a little more comfortable. Gheist can wear his arm for a very long time, but Mina needs to let her leg rest more often.
Both of them keep regular contact with the doctor to make sure both their prosthetics - and their bodies - are doing alright :D
hey frut i am asking. how does mina's prosthetic work? like the joints nd feet bit. i am asking for No Reason do not worry :) btw. i care she.
OH BOI I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Long story short: The prosthetics Taraya makes are powered by a mix of magic and mechanic components. The magic connects the mechanic parts to the wearer's nervous system, so they can use their mechanical limbs just as if they were organic!
A longer explanation and details under the cut!
So, I haven't actually dived too much into the details of with prosthetic limbs in Azeroth, because the way I see it? Endless possibilities. Mechagon was what made me start thinking of some of these possibilities - have you seen the mechgnomes? I have no idea how their limbs work, but that doesn't mean I haven't thought about it, and that paved way for what I do know - Taraya's prosthetics, how she makes them, and how they work! And since Taraya was the one that made Mina's leg, here's a breakdown on how she does it!
(And note that everything here can so apply to Gheist's arm, with a few changes since well. It's an arm, not a leg xD)
For Mina's leg - under the nice white case is a metal frame, to keep the structure and provide support for the leg, just like a skeleton. Tangled around that skeleton is wiring. Mina's leg uses magic to connect to her nervous system, and the wiring is responsible for connecting that magic to all the movable parts of her leg. That way it's movements are very precise, and Mina can control it just as a real organic leg, because magic is neat like that :D
There's two layers of casing, the inner casing is thick and sturdy to protect the skeleton and the wiring, and the outer casing is the white one with the gold decals. It's there's as an additional layer of protection and to make the whole thing a little prettier.
The mobile parts of the leg are the knee, ankle and toe joints. They're ball joints built to be as similar as Mina's original joints as possible, and they allow the same movement as your own! Again, they move thanks to the magic in the wiring. The knee and ankle have the most wiring connected to them, because they're responsible for the most important movements.
If you look at Mina's leg here you can see the brown parts on her heel and behind her knee:
That is padding. It's above the inner casing, and it's there mostly for making the prosthetic easier to wear.
The padding behind her knee makes it so she can bend her knee without the metal underneath digging into her thigh, and the padding on her heel is for absorbing shock when she walks. Usually, the padding will be on the entire underside of the foot, but Mina specifically asked for padding just on the heel. That's an adaptation for the specific way she walks - she's always had a little bit of an odd gait, even before she lost her original leg :)
The little gray ring above her knee is a sock - she wears it because putting the metal leg on her bare thigh can be uncomfortable, especially since she has to put her weight on it. So the sock is a special one made specifically to make wearing her leg a little more comfortable!
Mina's leg is removable, and it stays locked in place through special locks around and above the knee joint. The mechanism that holds the locks is also responsible for connecting the magic to her brain. Both removing and putting on the leg cause a little bit of disorientation, because of the magic messing with Mina's nervous system, and she needs a moment to clear her head and get used to it before she can continue with her day. That's something Taray's been trying to improve on the system for a while, she doesn't want her prosthetics to be invasive.
The magic that connects the prosthetic to the wearer's nervous system is a special one that Taraya herself found the formula to. It's arcane, and mostly electricity, with a special care to make it as stable as possible to prevent mishaps! The last thing we need is for a prosthetic to fail because of magical shenanigans xD
That's the gist of it. It may be a little wonky because, again, I haven't really given much thought to the finer details, but I think it makes sense. If anyone has any more questions, feel free to ask ^^
