Clement is Ali and Oop's legal guardian? What is Clement like as a guardian?

FUTURE EDIT: I just want to leave a note for anyone who may come across this post, that I've made changes to my story and none of this is canon anymore! :D His daughter is alive and well, and Ali and Oop only tour with the circus during spring break, summer vacation, and fall break. I just want to leave this post up for prosperity and a reminder it's okay to change your mind!

This is a really good question! It really made me reevaluate their relationship and plug up a few plot issues.

In short, as much as I want to say, "Clement is a great guardian! Nothing is ever wrong!" It’s important to note that Ali and Oop lost their mother when they were only five years old, and Clement lost his only child. It was…. hard…. on everyone.

Clement was not prepared to take on the responsibility of two children at his ripe age (Clement is in his 70s), so he has to work extra hard to juggle them and the responsibilities of the circus. It is a relief that so many other circus members care so deeply for them. They stay with their grandmother occasionally (Clement’s ex-wife), but he usually has them due to traveling constantly.

Practicing my characters faces from all angles. These characters have the most varied shapes, so figuring out the differences between each of them was a real challenge to say the least. Points to whoever can guess how long this took me 😅

Also, cannot decide whether or not to keep the scars on Clement’s design. They were part of his old OLD backstory and don’t make much sense now. 🤔

With the help of @artbybai, the Clowder Circus ringleader, Clement, had a HUGE glow-up! She did the sketches below that really sparked my creativity and it’s so nice to see him in something that fully encompasses his personality. Continue reading below for Clement’s backstory!

EDIT FROM THE YEAR 2024: Clement's story has changed a lot! The world has changed A LOT. These are now just cat people instead of IRL cats, and that affected a large number of the backstories. However, I don't want to delete this post or edit the writing because I want to be able to look back on it and see how much stuff has changed. You can find more updated info for all of my characters by the tag "oc:(name)" no spaces.

❤️💛💙Clement is a gentle giant of a cat with long saber teeth and facial scars. His intimidating appearance meant being often looked over at the shelter. He was eventually adopted by an older woman and they spent 8 long and wonderful years together, until the day she passed. With no family to turn to, Clement set off on his own. He happened upon a traveling circus, the Bingham Family Circus to be precise, and fell in love with the whole shebang. Enlisting the help of Jingle, a member of the Bingham family (who may have had other pressures pushing them to set off on their own), they got to work. His goal, to provide fellow strays, runaways, and otherwise downtrodden cats with a chance to connect with each other and build a purpose for themselves, and, thus, the Clowder Circus was born.❤️💛💙

As I (slowly) work on updating all my lovely circus cats, I wanted to share their current designs. Some of them won’t be changed much (or at all), and I’ve already handled the redesigns on the ones I was most concerned about.

In order, the names are:

Row 1: Clement, Jingle, Egg, Peanut, Moose, Duchess, Huxley

Row 2: Marlon, Charlotte, Blair, Ali, Oop, Sybil, Callista, Priscilla

Row 3: Devon, Ronnie, Rex, Lyall, Porter, Bean (me :3c)

I can’t wait until I have enough solid stuff to share more about each character with you guys! ❤️💙💛

Is there a relationship in the Clowder Circus (romantic, platonic, familial, etc) that you'd consider your favorite? If so, which is it?

Jist kidding. It is a hard choice, though, and not one I think I can make quite yet. I'm sure through the course of writing their stories I'll probably get attached to them in different ways, but, for the meantime, this was a good opportunity to share the existing relationships I have planned out.

Below is a list of all of the major relationships. It is generally fair to say everyone gets along on one level or another, but some of them have really bonded through their time in the circus in beautiful ways.

And, bonus, since I couldn't decide which was my favorite, I included some sketches I've done in the past showing off some of them. I hope you enjoy and let me know which one is YOUR favorite!
