The thing my favourite bot characters all have in common is that they desperately want something, enough that it consumes or even ruins their lives

Scarab was held captive and interrogated by Decepticons for a significant amount of time. They were eventually rescued, but they aren't quite the same as they used to be

Crosswind will continue to love them even if they can never be repaired, but every time he looks into Scarab's eyes, he wonders the same thing
