Triggers: Blood
Mentioned Malais @mining-for-days
Something felt off the moment their feet hit the ground when they exited the eluvian. Actually something had been feeling wrong for a while now but Polaris hadn’t been able to pin down what it was. He also forwent bringing it up to anyone because what was there to say “Something feels wrong, and not to freak anyone out or anything but I’ve been having horrible nightmares. Different than blighted nightmares, that fill me with a sense of impending doom”. Oh yeah that would definitely go over well with everyone. Which was why until they knew more they were keeping it to themselves. Maybe it would just go away like those odd dreams they had been having.
Polaris gave a quick glance towards where they had split off from Malais, only catching a last glimpse of their partner before the voice of his commander speaking drew their attention back. Jin was giving some sort of instruction which with all the commotion going around them even if she was speaking loudly was difficult to hear. What also wasn’t helping them hear her was this sudden soft ringing in his ear that felt as though someone had forcibly shoved their head into water and yanked them back out. Giving their head a shake to hopefully cut off whatever was causing it, which only started up a slew of barky coughs that left their chest feeling sore.
They were startled back into awareness by a firm and steady hand pulling them out and away from the crowds. Their feet backpedaling to just keep themselves standing upright. “Seriously Polaris? I’ve called out your name for the last two minutes. We were given our position, so stop looking like a halla spooked by firelight.” Stated Hesperia, who for what it was worth was practically skipping and putting in no effort at all in pulling Polaris along behind her.
“Sorry, Hesperia. You can let go now.” Polaris hastily replied and felt the hold on them release.
“Well then, let’s get moving! We have a dragon to help kill!” Hesperia said with a giddy enthusiasm she always seemed to have whenever she got to do field work. The taller elf just looked at their companion with an amused smile; they had only known the small warrior for a few years but she never seemed to let anything rain on her parade. Polaris was going to take hold of some of that optimism and use it to get them through this and back to Malais in one piece.
-Time skip-
The darkspawn just kept coming like cockroaches funneling up from the ground, over the broken wall and from every direction that Polaris and Hesperia could see. No matter how many they took down, it felt as though more replaced them in a matter of seconds. It didn’t help matters that Polaris ached from head to foot, the Wardens having taken an involuntary tumble off the wall when the second blighted dragon appeared. From the corner of their eye he was pretty certain they noticed Hesperia was favoring her left side as she continued to fight on.
The ringing in Polaris’s ear had not relented, instead increasing in its persistence to annoy them as it merged from just a sound to a distorted melody. Needing to remain focused elsewhere they did their best to ignore it; ignoring the way it made his skin crawl. It had to be because Ghilan'nain was here messing around with the Blight for her damn dragons. On top of it all the blood was rushing through his ears because of the constant dodging and maneuvering the duo was needing to do. But as quickly as that feeling had come it was soon gone.
Hesperia swung her hammer with all the strength she could muster with her good side, seeing as there was nothing but shooting pain on her right. From the corner of her eye as she went into a spinning strike, caught sight of crimson leaking from Polaris’s ears.
-Time skip-
Polaris leaned against a piece of rubble, their head was a mess, skin felt like there were ants crawling over them, chest feeling as though if they cough one more time a lung was going to come up. The distorted melody felt like it was tugging at something inside of him. Hesperia came limping over to their side, covered in the muck and gore of battle, and with a rather decent hit to the head that had left blood staining her face. Neither could bring themselves to sit for if they did the fatigue would’ve kept them there.
A cloth appeared before their eyes. “You have blood in your ear.” Hesperia muttered looking out at the slew of darkspawn bodies and not at her friend. She hadn’t seen Polaris take any hits to their head that should cause them to bleed from their ears. But she also didn’t want to speculate.
Polaris took the offered cloth and wiped at their ears. “Thanks, Hes.” Polaris’s voice came out shaky and a little raspy. They knew now what that feeling had been. Why something had felt so wrong. They didn’t want to say the word, if they did then it was real, and it was too soon. They were happy. They were in love, why did their world have to begin to crumble around them now. What was he going to tell Malais?!
“Let’s get you to a healer.” he said and pushed away from the rubble, crouching down in front of Hesperia. She rolled her eyes at them, and bumped Polaris with her foot.
“I can still walk, just help keep me balanced.” Hesperia said, trying her best to ease the tension that had settled around her friend. Polaris stood back up and offered their arm to the small warrior, who took it gladly. This was gonna be a long walk. A bit of silence fell between them, and the only sound was their footsteps sinking in the wet greyish marsh soil.
“You know what’s happening?” She whispered to them, eyes focused forward.
“Ye-” Before the words can finish leaving their mouth, Polaris erupts into one of the worst coughing fits yet. Their throat burning, chest feeling as if it might cave in or explode and then the copper taste hits their tongue. Bringing the cloth still clutched in their hand up to their mouth and watching as it is stained a dark murky red. Polaris doesn’t know how to react, it's all overwhelming.
Their emotional spiral was cut short by the sudden outburst from their friend. “Shit! What happened to them?!” Hesperia said with a sharp intake of air. The taller elf makes quick work of wiping any remaining blood from their mouth, and follows Hesperia’s gaze to the approaching figure. As they drew closer and closer the figure seemed to resemble their partner. Polaris had to blink several times to be sure of what they were seeing. It was Malais, coming towards them covered in blood. Their heart sank, what had happened?! Dropping Hesperia arm and rushing forward, Polaris shoving their own worries to the side. Hesperia caught the shift in Polaris as soon as they had seen the other coming towards them. She smiled softly and pressed onward using her hammer as a cane to get to the healers.
Meanwhile Polaris had come to an abrupt stop in front of their partner, the blood draining from their face. “Malais?! Ma’ fenor! Where are you injured? What happened?” Polaris asked in a panic.
Emerald eyes that had been looking at the ground a moment ago turn to look up at their partner, their usually sparkle now dull as Malais mumbles. "...I- Polaris... I didn't mean to. I was just trying to help, I- I didn't mean to-"
Polaris stared into those emerald eyes and felt their heart constricting, without a single word pulled Malais into crushing embrace. Tears slowly spilled down their cheeks, as they just held the one person they loved more than anything in the world. Wishing for more time.

‘Fuck. Shit. Just plain FUCK!’
This was certainly not how Polaris thought they would be returning to Weisshaupt. Sure, there have been instances in the past where attacks on the fortress had occurred but it has never been breached. Yet the neverending barrage of Darkspawn flowed into Weisshaupt like ants from a flooding anthill. Polaris had faced hordes before, but nothing like this.
After the front gate fell all Polaris could do was keep pressing further into the fortress. They released arrows, shot after shot firing from his bow, doing what they could to remain a clear distance from the larger darkspawn. Polaris would leave that task to those better suited. Darkspawn poured in from the sky and every crevice in sight, so distance seemed like a good course of action. Cries of anguish rang out across the blighted, bloody battlefield as flashes of spells went off from places Polaris couldn't see. They turned their sole focus on where their feet were guiding them. Eyes darting in every direction so quickly it didn't leave them any time to contemplate anything beyond moving and surviving. And that was their goal. To fucking survive this. Today would not be their end.
‘This is absolute hell!’ was the only thought that ran through Polaris's head. Having dodged yet another onslaught of spikes from a very annoying Hurlock, who had managed to stay just far enough out of Polaris's range, making it impossible for them to take a shot. Dip, dodge and weave was their next best choice until someone else could take it down. They moved past fallen wardens, and groups of people they had briefly seen at the lighthouse still fighting. It made them wonder where their own friends might be in the crumbling fortress.
Blight fell from the sky and had just about crushed them at least twice. ‘Why did blight have to be falling from the sky on top of everything?’ Rushing across the scaffolds and down through the courtyard beyond the first gate, Polaris could hear the bells ringing out calling for reinforcements. ‘What damn reinforcements did they think we had?’ Polaris scowled in the direction of the bell tower just as a group of shrieks came barreling towards them. With a moment's glance they leaped over the first shriek, landing on top of another and struck their blades down into its skull. Leaving no time for hesitation, they pulled one blade free and sliced it straight through another shriek's neck. Their other blade dislodged as they dodged the sweeping claws of the third Shriek, its blighted nails just missing their face. With one last effort, Polaris swiped his blade across the Shrieks chest, sending it falling back. But the darkspawn just kept coming and Polaris just kept striking them down. Searching for how to get out of the courtyard, Polaris was unaware that from behind them, a shriek leapt towards them. The sound of its screech was the only thing to notify them of its incoming claws, but the whisper of an arrow as it flew past their face and into the shriek's head killing it gave them pause. Whipping their head back in the direction the arrow had come Polaris thought they caught a glimpse of Herah atop the roof.
Spying a ladder at the far end of the courtyard, Polaris made a run for it, glancing back only when several spikes came flying past them. It was the stupid hurlock that seemed to have it out for them, but how was it still standing? It was obviously missing an arm and was littered with arrows but still it moved towards Polaris. “Damn Hurlock.” They muttered as they climbed up the ladder and shot off a few of their own arrows, but the creature just moved as if nothing could stop it. They need to keep moving, as long as they stay far ahead Polaris was certain the hurlock would either lose interest or be taken down. Hurriedly they climbed over debris and across the roof of what used to be an animal shed that creaked with every step. All the muscle in Polaris’s body ached, but the adrenaline kept them going.
They were almost to the bell tower when they heard the next set ringing out. The distraction of the bells caused them to step wrong and crash through the roof onto a pile of dead darkspawn. A sharp pain shot up through Polaris’s back. They were certainly gonna have one massive bruise after this. Pushing themselves from the pile of darkspawn they assessed for any other injuries, when none were found they continued on their path for the bell tower. Or what used to be the bell tower. Where once stood the large building that housed the bells of Weisshaupt now was a crumbling column.
Onward they moved, slashing down darkspawn, dodging falling blight and bits of rock falling from the sky. Until they finally made it to the ruins of the bell tower and began to scale what parts of it remained. Pulling up onto a landing inside, they looked down to make sure nothing was following up after. The sound of hurried feet approaching put Polaris back on high alert. They turned towards a doorway on the other side, watching as another individual burst through. It was Malais, looking rather worse for wear and with two shrieks pursuing them.
“Down!” Polaris shouts, knocking an arrow and letting it fly as Malais dove down sliding onto his back and shooting out a lightning orb towards the shrieks. With a screech, both Shrieks were downed. Checking for any more darkspawn that could have been following and finding none, Polaris let out a breath and took in the moment. They gave Malais a quick once over and caught sight of long claw marks down the side of one of their arms. A look of relief flashed across Malais’s face, bringing a little light back into their features. Moving to Malais’s side Polaris began examining the claw marks while also rummaging through their pack for water to clean them.
“Funny running into you here, dear warden” Malais lets out a hiss of pain when Polaris pours the water on the wound.
“We seem to find each other whenever you seem to need some assistance.” Polaris mused softly as they pulled some cloth also from their pack and dabbed away some of the blood. Once that was done, wrapped another clean cloth around the wound to keep it safe and clear until Malais could see a healer.
“They just don’t stop coming, do they?” Malais states looking down at the bandage now around their arm.
“No, they don’t. Darkspawn hordes are like bugs; they keep showing up until you kill the one in charge of them.” All the blood in Malais’s face suddenly drained away, seeing that Polaris began assessing the other elf for any major injuries.
“Malais, what is it?” Feeling a bit panicked when none could be found.
“Did the darkspawn blight me? Am I blighted now?! That’s the last fucking thing I need.” The sound of utter terror was laced into Malais’s voice. Polaris could rightly understand the fear Malais was feeling at the idea of being blighted. Placing their hand on Malais’s bandaged arm and for a brief moment all Polaris did was listen. Trying to look for what they knew to be the pulse of blight and using what they called a warden second sense to detect if any of it was coming from Malais. When the only pulse they could feel came from outside of the space they occupied Polaris’s shoulder dropped the tension they hadn’t even known they were carrying there.
“I can’t feel its pulse coming from you, Malais. There is no blight in you.” Polaris states trying to give the other elf a feeling of reassurance. Upon hearing that in fact they were not blighted Malais let out a shaky breath.
“Thank fuck.” was all Malais muttered before rising to their feet. Getting up their feet, Polaris motioned to the doorway leading out and back towards the streets below. They proceeded out of the ruins, and scaled down towards what Polaris could only describe as a street being swallowed by blight. Several darkspawn filled the space along with those fighting against them. The only thing to do was join the fray. Polaris looked to see what Malais was going to do and found that the elf had already moved on ahead into the fight. Polaris rolled their shoulder and jumped down knocking an arrow before letting it loose and taking down a genlock. Tunnel vision settled in and their focus became solely to take down as many as possible while they dodged and shot off arrows.
Suddenly the ground below them began to quake until a loud boom rang out and a massive ogre broke through a wall followed by a new wave of darkspawn. Every second the battle went on it only seemed to get worse. One eye kept a close watch on the ogre as it charged and threw debris every which way it could. Even so Polaris couldn’t let that stop them from fighting onward. They moved through the street fighting as if it were a dance that they had memorized. And as they had just about cleared the area, Polaris took a risky glance to see if Malais had made it out towards the library. With doing so they did not notice the ogre charging right for them until their very being was flying through the air and slamming into the nearby wall knocking the air right out of their lungs. A sickening crunch was all Polaris heard before pain began pulsating through their bow arm.
They rolled over, hugging the broken arm into their chest while trying to suck air back into their lungs. Polaris knew they had to move or risk being completely crushed when the ogre righted itself. Swiftly as they could, they slipped their bow across their body and used it as a way to keep the arm tightly pressed against themselves. Pushing up from the ground, they used their one good arm to brandish their sword and leapt onto the back of the dazed ogre. With all the strength that they could muster, they drove the blade down severing the ogre's head from its body. Jumping off the ogre’s back as it slumped dead on the ground, Polaris made for the library stairs.
Beyond the now makeshift doorway that led to the library steps, is where Polaris finally caught sight of Herah up in the rampart doing what she does best, launching sniper shots through the eyes of darkspawn. Malais could be seen at the far end of the area surrounded by flashes of lightning and bursts of flames. Polaris just needed to make it to the top of the stairs and it would all be somewhat better than it had been. But something made the hairs on the back of their neck stand on edge, followed by a roar that they couldn’t mistake. Turning to look behind themselves the sight was astonishing and terrifying all at the same time. It was that same damn hurlock from before, although now its head was leaning at an awkward angle and parts of its flesh was melting off as though it had walked through flames. There was nothing Polaris could do against this seemingly undying creature, especially with their bow arm out of commission. Moving backward down the path into the still ongoing battle behind them, eyes stuck on the hurlock moving closer. Polaris went with the only thing they could think of.
“Herah! Shoot the hurlock!” The world moved in slow motion, up-high Herah knocked an arrow and in front Polaris the hurlock threw its final spike. The arrow and spike flew past each other hitting the marks almost at the exact same moment. Through its eye was Herah’s arrow and down fell the creature. And the spike now was puncturing right through Polaris’s abdomen. There was no chance to scream or yell as warmth rushed up their throat and with a ragged cough blood dribbled down Polaris’s chin. Letting out a choked laugh with more blood following, at least Polaris’s fear of dying alone would not come true. The edges of their vision started going black, their head feeling hazy.
‘Fuck. Shit. Fuc-’ And the world went dark.
