CircusAid has been in Katsika for 2 weeks now hosted by our awesome partners Habibi.Works. It’s been rewarding to see how much the kids and our team have grown already, not only in circus skills but also in communication and supporting each other. My most enjoyable moments in the camps is when the kids demonstrate supporting each other. We will leave after a few months but they will continue a long journey and process to resettlement. I can appreciate the longer term impact of this work when I see participants joyously supporting each other in being safe and successful! I know there are so many issues in the world right now. Last weekend we performed for the residents of Eleonas Camp for their Eleonas got talent season final. To protect their safety we are unable to take photos or video of the residents that performed but they were the stars of the night! We felt honored to be included in their celebration and look forward to sharing more movement and creativity with them and as well as the members of Thiva and Malakasa camps over the next 2 months. I am learning about the many and complex issues refugees here are experiencing. Despite some difficult and tragic circumstances we are humbly committed to trying to bring a little bit of joy to people through circus arts and it’s not always easy. Thank you to everyone who has supported CircusAid returning to Athens this year and especially to the NGOs and participants accepting us into their worlds to co-create some special moments. Inspiring first day at Wfot 2018 in Cape Town. I presented some preliminary research findings and was wowed by a workshop on displacement by Kit Sinclair former WFOT president. I feel proud to be part of a profession that is confronting their own privilege and racism through conversations about decolonization of occupational therapy. So much respect for Dr. Victoria Amu for the great work she is doing in Nigeria.
