HCT provides professional development training and direct client services that use circus activities as evidence-based tools to increase the occupational participation of service recipients. HCT's social innovation branch, CircusAid, provides free services to help people displaced by war and natural disasters attain transferable life skills to promote success in unstable physical and political environments. CircusAid programs focus on the intersection of circus and OT for addressing the negative consequences of displacement, especially mental health issues and trauma. Since 2015, CircusAid has worked in Greece, France, and Indonesia, engaging over 5,000 political and environmental refugees in social circus programs. Little Amal Walks NYC is a free public art festival featuring Amal, a 12-foot tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl who has traveled across Europe and is continuing her journey in NYC this fall. The walk is a celebration of art, hope and shared humanity that aims to unite communities and refocus attention on the urgent needs of migrants and refugees. Repost from @projectelea • After a bit more than 6 years Project Elea’s mission at Eleonas Refugee Camp has come to an end. This is following the Greek government’s decision to refuse access to the camp for all the organizations that supported the community. The government has decided to close Eleonas as part of their desire to remove refugees from Athens in order to hide them away in remote locations, make a large number of them homeless and even arrest some whom they consider illegal. In this way they can claim a victory in the eyes of the public opinion following the Fortress Europe strategy they have been implementing so consistently. The camp residents will now be excluded even more from society with much fewer opportunities for education, employment, health care, housing and integration. Having realized the future that awaits them, the vast majority of the residents are refusing to leave and are protesting this decision on a daily basis; however, the government and municipality of Athens seem determined to evacuate the camp even through brutal police intervention in the coming days. Project Elea and its 2500 volunteers have given their heart and soul to the community alleviating the suffering, filling the gaps and failures of the government and large international organizations who at the end of the day should be ashamed of the disgraceful and inhumane way they have been treating refugees. We are proud of what we have achieved and for having supported more than 12000 people over the years, yet we are sad about the way this mission has come to an end solely because the residents deserve a lot more dignity, humanity, respect and opportunities. Our departure leaves some of the most vulnerable families even more exposed, literally at the border line of hunger although they are indeed in Europe and it’s year 2022. The door is open for you to leave, if you have a problem.” This statement is not only a slap in the face of people within the asylum process, it is also factually incorrect: People within the asylum process are not allowed to cross the borders to other countries." The destruction of the community built shops in the camp of Katdikas happened only days after the Greek Minister for Migration, Mitarakis made a statement referring to “real refugees” from the Ukraine, implying that the other refugees Greece is currently hosting are not real refugees to begin with. We not only condemn this racist narrative and the destruction of shop structures as such, but also the disgusting attitude and the xenophobia they represent. We condemn the humiliation and disrespect of people who came to Greece as refugees.
