Reposted from @whalesanctuaryproject - Orcas are wide-ranging predators, diving to depths of more than 300 feet to forage and often traveling more than 100 miles a day. When they are forced into life in a marine park, they circle their tanks in chemically treated water with typically no space to dive one body length or even swim in a straight line. The 10 orcas and 87 belugas being held in Srednayay Bay in Nakhodka, Russia are in very cramped sea pens right now, they were captured illegally last year by a consortium of four companies whose apparent intention was to sell them to marine entertainment parks in China. The Whale Sanctuary Project team is working with the Russian government to assess the condition of the whales and to advise on a rehabilitation program with a view to their being returned to ocean waters.
