"Doktor."
"Ja?"
"When are Engineers going to die, doktor?"
The Heavy, sitting on a bench in the small squad room, stared dejectedly at a point on the wall, the Medic standing next to him. Around the room were the last of their team, and the few surviving BLU team members. The Scouts sat, talking in one corner about baseball, as they have been doing for the past hour since the two teams had barricaded themselves in this room. The Demomen, two of each team, were either passed out, or drunkenly muttering. The Pyros were sitting next to each other, cross-legged and humming softly, both of them wearing sedge hats on top of their ever-present masks. The Snipers, Soldiers, and most of the Spies were gone. And the Engineers...
The Engineers were outside the door, waiting for you all to come out. Something had changed them. Made them... unnatural. Even being here, in this room, with none of them nearby is unsettling, like a soft laugh in the darkness of your room at night. Seeing the shadow of one made even the Heavy shiver. Their presence, however brief, had this effect on everyone.
And somehow, the speakers all played the same song when one of them was nearby. A song so very unsettling in and of itself... The fact that it played over the sound system when those... things were close by made things worse.
You dig your disguise kit out of your pocket and flip it open, the continuously present sight of an endless supply of cigarettes greeting you, as well as the eighteen masks you have. Recently, only two of them have seen frequent use, as the other sixteen are no longer necessary. The two masks you have for the Engineers. Surprisingly, the masks still work, despite the fact that these things are no longer human. You look around the room, the Heavy and Medic staring at you, waiting to hear something. No matter how discreet you are, it seems that everyone working with you notices it when you pull out your kit.
"I do not sink zey will die anytime soon, my friend. I have a gut feeling zat zey will outlive us, no matter how long we hold out here." You take out the RED Engineer mask and stare at it, contemplating the somewhat faded image on it before you put it on. "I am going to go out zhere. See how bad ze situation is."
With the mask in place, you walk over to the only empty spot on the wall. You press a tile, and the wall slowly slides open to reveal a passageway that leads out to the rest of the base. You enter it and the door slides shut behind you, a series of lights in the floor coming on in pairs down the passageway. After making sure the mask is in place, you begin walking down the path. Soon, you come to the end of the path, the song on the PA slowly gaining in volume as one of those monstrosities shambled past your location. Soon, the music faded and stopped completely. You carefully slide open the entrance and close it behind you, turning to the left and imitating the shamble you have perfected, your left arm hanging limply at your side with your right positioned crookedly above your head.
After a few minutes of hobbling along, you come to what you know to be the center of their "hive", a complex so alien to you that it feels like your mind is slowly rolling around in your skull, the soft hum of that unnerving song slowly growing louder. In the center of the hive, you see a pair of men in blue suits, suitcases in their right hands. They know you're here. They know why you've come. They've always known.
"So. Glad, that you could. Join us, Jacques. There is no need, for your. Mask. They will not. Harm, you." The music had reached a fevered high as the mass of Engineers, all of them twisted, malformed, and unnatural stood around the perimeter of the room, waiting for something to happen.
With shaky hands, you remove the Engineer mask from your face, the piece of paper slowly floating to the ground. The more human looking of the two men in front of you reached out his hand and softly grasped your shoulder, never breaking eye contact.
"You, have been exceedingly. Useful, to our goals, Jacques. It's high time, that we rewarded you. For your contributions."
The world flashed with colors you have no name for, then everything went black.
You were the last human Spy.
Now, you are just like your Engineer brothers. Twisted. Changed.
Perfect.
You are the Odd Spyder.
And there is nothing standing between you and your brothers now.
The song plays forever in your head, and you hum it as you walk down the halls of this facility, the song playing both in your mind and from the speakers.
It is beautiful.
